Thought of Roger Howarth's return both pains and excites . . .

. . . at the same time. from Soaps.com on Sept 17, 2010

I am a guy who grew up watching OLTL. Don't ask why, because I couldn't tell you really. It's always been a show I've kept up with and probably always will be. I remember as a child, 7 or 8 years old I'd sit down and watch it with my mother on vhs. And I loved the summer months, as school was out and it gave me from 1 to 2 in the afternoon to sit down and watch it.

As a screenwriter, I can only say this is both bad and good for business on the show. And no I have no affiliation with the show at all. These are my thoughts on what is to happen in the coming months. I could be wrong, but doubt it.

1. Trevor St John is a brilliant actor. He's such a scene stealer and such a enigmatic person, he commands attention. He's nearing 40, and as you may or may not know, it's the new 30 in Hollywood. More so when you've got the talent he does. That guy can do anything he wants to do. But moving on. His rendition of Todd, to me, is Todd. He made him the versatile character he has become today. Without Trevor's diversity and range of emotion, he would not be the sympathetic devil we see in Todd. Roger Howarth was much more swarthy and much more menacing. He was good, at the time, but he could never pull off what we see in Today's Todd.

2. Roger coming back as Todd would/will only cause fans of the show who've just come aboard in the last 7 years to really lose faith in its consistency. They will feel betrayed and tricked. It's not a good move. More so because they've tried this trick out once or Twice before in Soap world. It didn't end well then either.

3. Bringing Roger back as any other character would be a disservice too, though. He is, for all intense and purposes, TODD MANNING. Trevor St. John walked onto the set as Walker Lawrence and, to this day, I still believe he was intended to be until the new writers came on and wrote it the way they did. It's like George Lucas lying to his fans all these years about how he always planned Star Wars the way he did. He's lying. He had no idea and probably still don't. Same with the writers of OLTL - The old writers wrote in Walker - Some new writers came on and suggested he be Todd to throw a wrench into the pipeline. It worked to their advantage, though.

So, all that aside, here is what I believe is going to happen...

Dani is torn between Two dads. Ross and Todd. One her real day, TODD, and the other her connected father, ROSS. She has a dueling heart to contend with and no one to turn to other than Star right now. Star and Danni's new boyfriend she's got, but he's ill important right now.

Star can't relate to Dani's problems though, can she? Well, not exactly... She can. More so than you probably know. Roger comes back as her Dad. Todd Manning. Real Todd. What's that leave? Trevor St John's Walker Lawrence. Only, star has only known Walker as her dad for 7 years of her life. That is her dad emotionally, and, as the show would say, in every way that matters or counts. For 7 years Trevor St. John has been there for her and with her. Standing by her side. Pretending to be her dad, and, at the same time, doing a really good job of it.

Now Dani and Star have even more in common. And, it wouldn't be a stretch to say Dani would pick Ross in this instance as she really never did know her dad at all.

My guess -- Roger comes back as Todd. Trevor is Walker and shortly there after leaves the show and goes on to bigger and better things. He's got the talent and the looks. He's got the range and many people are starting to talk about him now he's got more proven work on the way. Let's face it, the best part of "BIO DOME" was Trevor St. John's small meaningless part.

That's my two cents, folks. Could be wrong... but I think it's right

  1. I hope he's right.

Don't like his take on who's the better Todd but I do like he's take on RH's return.

  2. I totally agree with Ellen! I like his idea of RH returning and everything though I'm not too fond of his thoughts on who the better Todd is. I also think he's totally wrong in his thoughts on TSJ's ability with emotions vs. RH's ability at emotions!

  3. I agree Precious. I can't even believe he has been watching OL for as many years as he has and can think TSJ does Todd in any way, shape or form better than RH. Whatever he sees in TSJ, he obviously doesn't see that the character he is portraying is not Todd.
