Today is a big day! Last day of school before vacation, half day, we're doing a breakfast for 86 kids :D and.....YOUR GIFT ARRIVES!
Zach: "Calm down, you want to go back to solitary?" I wonder more and more about Zach, he's so emotionless and very plotting in his own way, and even though Todd seems way worse than him at this point, Zach has no remorse or regret, or anything. Just a blankness.
Milton Bittlecomb! You are back! Now THIS is what TSJ was doing when he was younger. To me, he's a perfect match for him. A good imposter story would be to see that Milton grew up into TSJ and had revenge on his mind. LOL.
Powell meets Rebecca. Todd meets Nora's newspaper clipping. This seems to be the start of a trend, with Roger having scenes ALONE that work better than some scenes with other actors and actresses! Right before he crumbles up her photo, you can see Jack Manning so much in that young face!
"She has the power of forgiveness." And he couldn't be more right. Rebecca helps Todd become more human to us. Eventually, she leads him to be a better man. I love this about their relationship, because in all her own weaknesses, she still does really help him change. Sigh. Very romantic in its own right.
His "act" here with Rebecca is almost seamless. He's so VILE. LOL. I love that word to describe him at his worst. "Its kind of like a sign that you and I were meant to be friends." :D Go Todd!
Love these scenes. I don't like that Rebecca got used, but inside him, he was really searching for something better and this was the way he could reach that.
FAIL: Powell's hair - it's perfectly coiffed in jail. He's got every strand in place. LOL.
Sound off!

There were three men that night who raped Marty. The ringleader was Todd but he had very specific reasons for doing it. There was Powell, the one who wanted to be "in" and let Todd talk him into "it". Then there was Zach a follower, yes, but more than that Zach was the one without an agenda who saw absolutely nothing wrong and raped Marty because he thought it was fun. If you step back and look at them perhaps the most evil of the three was Zach.
ReplyDeleteNow we have the three in prison and again the most atrocious seems to be Todd. He's not above using Rebecca as a means to exact his revenge on Nora and Marty but he's starting to let us see the cracks in his armor. We are finding out a little bit about what makes Todd behave and lash out. Powell is all about contriteness right now. He hates Todd and feels that the only one to blame for his actions is Todd because he didn't want to rape Marty but Todd made him do it..For all of his feelings of Guilt, Powell is really living in a state of denial that will come back and bite him later. Lastly we have Zach, he has no remorse for what he did, he truly only regrets getting caught. For all his amoral attitude though, Zach is a pragmatist . To Zach, if he waits things out, he'll soon find a means to shorten his stay. In reality, by doing nothing and not showing any remorse for his crime Zach is the only one of the Three that ends up doing all the Time.
Enter Rebecca, our catalyst, Powell sees her as someone to protect from Todd, because Powell only sees evil when he looks at Todd. Todd sees her as a means to help fool the guards and his fellow inmates but he is also beginning to see a little of himself in her. For all that he is using her, He takes offense and lashes at Zach for Zach's rude remark about her. Even in this early acquaintance Todd is starting to get some feelings for her. Of course he is quick to dismiss that it is anything more than just needing her to make headway in his revenge plot. Zach sees Rebecca as merely Todd's blow up doll, another object for his and Todd's amusement.. he doesn't see her as real.
So my feelings for the three of them boil down to Pity for Powell because he hasn't really accepted his actions yet...I feel disgust at Todd for his treatment of Rebecca but at the same time I find myself feeling sympathy because he seems tortured, not about what he did to Marty, he hasn't accepted his part in that yet; but I feel sympathy because he's showing signs that deep down there is a person who does "feel" but no one can see it accept Rebecca. Even his own "buddies " have no idea what makes him tick. For Zach my feelings are overall dislike and the feeling that he deserved this sentence and he is getting what he deserved.
I don't know...there's a scene later (I believe when Nora and Powell visit Zach for information where Todd may have taken off to with Rebecca) where Zach mentions that he's still haunted by Marty's screaming for help.
ReplyDeleteI don't think he's completely without a conscience...I think he's just extremely uncomfortable with it and does everything he can not to show weakness to others. He was very similar to Todd in this regard, only he didn't harbor the same rage. Todd, of course, eventually opened up and started to admit "weakness" (or what he deemed "weakness").
Zach continued to project an aura of nonchalance and used his sense of humor (also similar to Todd) as a way of coping with everything. But he was also pragmatic; he didn't cry his way to forgiveness like Powell, and he also didn't fight/buck the system like Todd. He assessed his situation and determined the best course of action was to "work within the system" and "angle for parole as early as possible." Ironically, he had to serve by far and away the longest sentence of the 3, which you hear him sound off about (and he has a point) later on.
Unfortunately, they never really dug too deep with Zach. He has his own story but they were so focused on Todd and Powell that he had to just take a supporting role.
I think in a nutshell, the idea of raping Marty excited Zach, and he wanted keep Todd thinking he was "cool." Both Zach and Powell went places they never would have thought they could go before and discovered things about themselves they couldn't deal with.

ReplyDeleteThanks for you input, I went and rewatched the episodes of Zach with Nora and Powell...I'm still not convinced that Zach really had any real feelings about Marty..When he made the comment to Powell and Nora thay had just told him that Supposedly Todd had brutally killed Suede and they were in fear for Rebecca in fact basically Nora had threatened Zach with aiding Todd if he didn't try to help..In his mind it seemed prudent to act like he cared for Marty and Rebecca. Zach will always put himself first.
If I remember, though, Zach blew off Nora's threats.
ReplyDelete"Well gee, what are you gonna do? Send me to PRISON?"
When Powell got Zach to believe Rebecca might really be in danger and asked if he wanted that on his conscience, he caved.
