A lot of us love the most popular Todd scenes. I know I do! But, what are the "less famous" scenes of Roger as Todd that you love?
I'll start with the scenes between he and CJ and Cord at the hospital, following his rescue of CJ, Jessica, and Marty. I watched this again, this morning, to be exact, and I cannot watch it without crying. I can't believe the range of emotions that Roger puts us through in a few minutes' time. This is one of my very favorite LF (less famous) scenes of all time with Roger. I do have a lot more, but I will let you all write some of them before continuing.

One of my favorite scenes comes early in Todd and Blair's relationship I love the scene where Blair comes to visit Todd at the Jail after he's been arrested for Rebecca's attempted rape.. Here are two people that keep finding themselves in each other's company and they are beginning to bond. Blair has no other agenda than to try and help a new friend. I love her concern when she sees his hand and grabs it. Todd's look is priceless. It's like he can't believe anyone could feel concern for him but here's someone he barely knows showing it. The friendship starts to deepen as Blair offers to help him with Marty. It's definitely the beginning of a friendship so unique and real even if it is bazaar to everyone else.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite "obscure" scene is the scene very early on, even before the conviction, when Todd and Zach are having the conversation about women and relationships.......and Todd really gets deep for a small moment when talking about dealing with them and wanting them to just like him......and then the waitress walks by and he puts on the frat boy and "cat calls" to her. But I love it so much because it's probably one of the first times we get a glimpse into the thing called Todd Manning.....where we get to see "inside"just a little bit......it makes you actually say, wow, there is something inside him. And this is probably the first scene I thought that.
ReplyDelete@juju - I so agree about that scene you mentioned! Its an early window I call it.
ReplyDeleteAnother obscure scene that I really like is the one where Viki is going to "hit" Kevin, and Todd sees her, comes into the library at Llanfair and tries to comfort her as she falls apart. He can't really physically make himself be there, but you can see on his face that he feels her pain, and that is the work of Roger at its best. He carries so much in a look. I love that scene, where she's breaking down and looks to him and he is trying to be her support. So powerful.
ReplyDeleteOk I warned everyone that I could go ON and ON and ON with this thread. Another one: When Todd is crying and CJ and Sarah come in, and she runs to him, hugs him, and says "Don't croy, Ali, please don't croy." I cannot TAKE it. I always fill up with tears at that. He's pained and she's so loving and sweet. I love that whole scene in the garden shed. Come on, someone else?
ReplyDeleteAnother of my favorite little scenes takes place at Rodi's shortly after Powell has been caught. Marty, Nora and Bo are sitting discussing everything that has transpired when Todd arrives and comes to their table. It's an uneasy truce between all of them and I found it interesting the Todd squats down between Marty and Nora to make himself less threatening as he politly asks Bo for his help in arranging an escort so he can go see his Father. The civility of the moment played out so realistically nothing over the top but allof it very sincere
ReplyDelete@RKARENA, yes, yes. Totally great scene and often missed.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with that Todd/Nora/Bo/Marty scene.....where he is so humble.
ReplyDeleteOK, heres my next one.......when he is hiding at the garden shed and "runs" into Mini Todd again in the boy that is there with Jess. Todd sooooooooo wants to beat the crap out of that kid........he sees way to much of himself in that kid......another growing point for Todd......small and obscure but a powerful moment.
When it comes to CJ and Sarah scenes I have to confess that the scene where CJ and Sarah surprise Todd at his room over Rodi's is one of my all time favorites. Todd's really thrown for a loop that these 2 small children came and found him at Rodi's of all places and that they snuck out to do it. It is so charming when he tries to tell them they need to forget him because no one will understand, and they refuse to give up on their friend.. When Sarah picks up Todd's hand and puts it on top of her and CJ's hands you can feel all the resistance go out of Todd. His comment about going to be in trouble after all is so touching and you melt right along with him at their friendship.
ReplyDeleteI have another. After "the belt scene," Todd goes toward Marty for a while, and there is a scene with he and Marty at the club, where she says "you hate me, go ahead, say it, you've always hated me." He slowly turns to her and says, "I don't hate you Marty." The look is pained longing.....Roger's amazing, and I will continue to say it.
ReplyDelete@Kim.......you know I LOVE the Todd and Marty dynamic! I will say that I do think Todd "loved" Marty in the only way Todd can.....maybe it was "obsessed/loved" Marty! LOL He always had her on this untouchable plateau.......even then he acted like he couldn't stand her half the time. The scene you mentioned really does say alot.....and then the scene at her house in front of the fire when he says "I felt alot of things but HATE wasn't one of them".....again, I know this is why RH wanted out.....but dang!
ReplyDeleteThat being said....that is why I HAD to watch when SH came back even with TSJ in the role....to see if any of "that" was still there. Of course it wasn't.....but man I would have love to seen RH in those scenes. It wouldn't have been Tarty....they would have never had sex.....BUT....I could see Todd keeping Marty from everyone to care for her......and the angst in him would have been out of this world....she's falling in love with "stranger" and he knows it's wrong.....she want to kiss him.....can you imagine how RH would have played that! The pain would have been in his eyes the whole time....telling her about "the guys" that rape her......I have to admit, I would have LOVED to see RH play those scenes because I know the sex wouldn't have happened, but the rest would have been electric! And just think about SH and how that fall out would have been with RH in the role.....even if sex wasn't a factor......god I would die for those scenes!!!!!!! LOL
Two things, I could never doubt that ANYTHING played by TSJ would be played differently and better than RH. Never doubt it. No, the sex would NOT have been there.....RH wouldn't buy it, even if she did lose her memory. If sex was not a factor, I could have tolerated it, until he TOLD HER, and he WOULD TELL HER. He never would have let the charade go on, Real Todd I mean. I watched it too and it made me sick to watch it. The affect on him was WRONG. (Think "I'm all for gang rape").
ReplyDeleteI often thought Todd loved Marty, but not the way he loved Blair. He loved Marty in an obsessive, untouchable way, like she was something he could never have and it made him admire it more. Often, he did really have strong anger toward her, and strong obligation also. I do think he loved her at various times, especially their beginning. However, you know how I feel about later, he loved Blair deeply and completely - and differently.
The dynamic between these two (Marty and Todd) is as complex as it is irreplaceable. Thank you, Roger and Susan.
