Clip of the Day, January 20, 2011

I missed the "cut off" for today's clip before the mailing was sent out. Plllth.

HOW IN THE WORLD does Bo figure out that clue??? I am glad he does, but it's a bit amazing!!!

At one point, Todd has her, and gets up and moves away. I never really noticed that before, until now. It's hard to hear what is being said sometimes in the clip, but as I replayed it, "I am in control now. I call the shots," this said when he's holding her headband in his hand and poised over her. Then he gets up and moves away, saying "it's payback time."

She responds, "you're a sick coward."

I've never noticed his hesitation before today and how he backs off her, when he clearly could have raped her or whatever right then.

She continues, "you're afraid of your father and you're afraid of women."

"Why don't you just try and get away and I will show you how afraid I am."

HMMMM. What can you read into this? He's across the room from her when saying all this. He does come up behind her and blow in her hair, to scare her, but at this point, he's all hands-off. When she insinuates he's stupid, he seems to get angrier. However, as the scene progresses, and I can't believe I never noticed this before, it's her conversation with him about his "fears" and her intimidation of him, by questioning his manhood, telling him what is he waiting for, etc, that actually gives her the edge to get away and get to the lower floor.

"No more Mr. Nice Guy." I had to laugh here, because we hear it later, at least two other times. Nora gets the bright idea (no pun intended) to put out the lights. With his lost hearing in one ear, he's definitely at a disadvantage.

This comes to my favorite scene during this whole thing (next clip, clearly.) They are both in the dark, and she is using the Christmas ornaments to taunt him. I do love it.

I will go away from this clip with one thing, and I don't mind being the one who is the odd one out, or the unpopular thinker: I don't think he intended to or was capable of raping her at all.

Scaring her, YES. He always loved to scare people, throughout his life, he uses fear often.

But to actually rape her, he had the chance more than once, and he doesn't follow through.

If he were intending to, when in her room, when he had her in his clutches, there would have been no reason to back off. So, I believe, either he wanted to do this and COULDN'T, or never meant to in the first place, or that something held him back, whether it be conscience, or hidden fears, or a physical inability....whatever it was, he doesn't do it when he has the chance. He ALMOST seems like he doesn't want to at a few points.

Go ahead, aim at me, I am ok with it.

FAIL: Nothing, these two are immaculate in their work.

Sound off!!!

  1. @ Kim We're in total agreement about what Todd's true intentions were. I Think Todd went there more for the satisfaction of knowing he could get to Nora and wanting to see her squirm. Just like he didn't kill Powell, I don't think he really intended to rape Nora. He wanted to humiliate and scare her. For him he relished in the fact that she was blind. But it was really just a power trip, like you said he had so many opportunities to really harm her and he didn't in fact once again it was Todd who found himself hurt annd vunerable. Bo had a little help from Nora since she weakened Todd before he got there.

  2. Wow, someone agrees with me on this! I just can't see him as a total nutcase and cruel, repeat-offender rapist after he's hit jail and Rebecca. How would he ever explain raping Nora to her?

Hard to say, but I've made this point before myself. People throw around the word "attempted rape" on this show, just as people do in real life when talking ABOUT this show.

    "Todd tried to rape Nora."
"Todd tried to rape Marty again and again."

If he'd really tried, he would have succeeded. He definitely ASSAULTS these women when he grabs them and threatens them, but he doesn't actually ATTEMPT to rape them. It also brings me to another point--Todd was going to be charged with "attempted rape" of Rebecca during the Hospital Rape storyline (obviously, we all know Powell was the hospital rapist), but how, exactly, would a court arrive at a decision that someone grabbing Rebecca in the woods was "attempted rape?" Unless he was ripping her clothes off or something, there's no evidence of anything other than maybe attempted kidnapping.

I have a theory on why Todd doesn't go through with it when he's at the beach house with Nora, and I think it has to do with more than just his enjoying the psychological torture/fear he's inflicting on her. I think Rebecca had already begun to have an effect on how far he was willing to go. He was constantly juggling back-and-forth with his "revenge spree" and his "dream" of "starting over" with Rebecca. If he'd gone to the extent he was implying he intended, he would have reached the "point of no return"...he just couldn't do it quite yet.
