Thanks go out to Juju today for putting up[ 4 new vids this weekend! Thanks!
And now, two clips because I missed yesterday!
Marty puts two and two together and catches Miss Rebecca in a lie. This sets the stage for Marty's being terrorized in the Tabernacle. I am still convinced, after watching him with Rebecca before she shows up, that he is not intending to kill or really hurt Marty, just scare her to death. When she knocks, he does not answer. She enters the building on her own, to look for Rebecca or for a clue to his whereabouts. If he really wanted to kill or rape her, he would have opened the door and grabbed her and got it over with. However, these long, drawn-out scenes where he torments and scares people are not realistic if we're to believe he intends to commit a violent act. His hatred overwhelms everything else; and inside somewhere, he wants to be worth of Rebecca's faith in him. He thinks he can explain away or talk over scaring someone, but wouldn't ever be able to explain away actually physically punishing her.
Of course, these scenes with Todd and Marty are some of his most disgusting work. Roger plays it up big time here, and is definitely scary. He's vile, nasty and degrading - everything that has been put upon him. Of course, we don't get to know about that until much later in his story.
The second clip starts with the "What would you do for love?" promo! I remember it well! The show was already SORT OF romanticizing him by putting Rebecca into the mix.
Rebecca is a little afraid that Powell might be right. She's considering going to the police, and it's Christmas time! There is always something really snazzy at the holidays back in the good old days! No filler shows, and you can expect something awesome to happen.
The scenes following are just...edge-of-your-seat Roger. He's so frightening and yet somewhere in your head, you're hoping for a glimmer of humanity. I love two things: One, how you DON'T GET THAT GLIMMER until MUCH LATER IN THESE SCENES and Two, the way the show imposes Marty's piano music with his theme songs. Very effective clash of the two personae. Hard to believe that he COULD (not saying he is) but COULD still feel rejection and pain when he's with her from before the rape? Who knows with Mr. Manning.
Both actors are AMAZING in their roles! Wow! Stunning work! Really makes me want to see them on screen again.
FAIL: Nada

I have just a few things to say. the most important thing is "DANG IT" just when Todd was beginning to get to a better place because of Rebecca he's finds hiself confronted with the one that everything started with, none other than Marty. Suddenly all the rage is back and all thoughts of just getting out of there evaporate. At this point in Todd's life he's still ruled by the rage, It colors everything he does. When he's with Marty all logical thought goes out the window in favor of "let's hurt her because she started it not me' Todd journey has started but a lot is going to happen before he's willing to look inside himself and see the real causes of his dilemna.
ReplyDeleteThere's a certain difference in Todd's demeanor in parts of this scene...he's much less sure of himself in terms of how far he's willing to go to get his "revenge."
ReplyDeleteI think the key line to everything in these scenes..."I can't just back off now." The fact that he's even saying that implies the thought of "backing off" crossed his mind...and at least part of him wants to. In fact, that's probably what he wants to do deep down, but he feels like he has no other choice based on how his mind works as far as "winning" and "losing" is concerned and how it affects him. He's also considerably weakened by the post-stab wound infection, so that definitely plays a role...but his anger has always been sufficient fuel before. In these scenes, there's something else at work, restraining him.
I tell you Marty brings out the worst in Todd. He was headed to a better place and handling things better until she came in the room. Kind of reminds me how he was finally getting his life turned around and finding happiness with Blair and boom Marty reared her head again and got him to help her in Ireland and he was never the same after that.
