Clip of the Day, March 23, 2011 (195)

We start off with a glimpse at the Viki/Sloan/Clint triangle. Sad being reminded of Clint Ritchie's death...he was one of the OLTL legends.

Rebecca and Powell at the police station with Bo. Rebecca is totally giving away her feelings for Todd. Her point about Todd having been there for months and there having been no victims is a poignant one. Of course, Bo doesn't want to hear of it. Everyone thinks they know Todd better than Rebecca, but they're wrong.

And she still can't get that kiss out of her head!

"Including Todd?" Rebecca is still concerned for his safety when nobody else is.

And Todd now has three people who genuinely care about him. He's slowly building some momentum.

Well, here's loud, self-righteous Marty. Sorry, but I can't stand her during this part of the story. I mean, I know intellectually that she has good reason to be upset and even angry at Rebecca for her part in his post-escape rampage, but she's just so loud, repetitive, self-righteous, and one-note. Her telling Rebecca how she's supposed to feel about Todd is just too much. Oh, heaven forbid she cries when a guy she became close to/fell in love with DIES...as if that's any of Marty's business. Her blowing up at Rebecca in this scene is one thing, but you would THINK that Marty would have been relieved enough by Todd's "death" that she would've let Rebecca grieve. Instead, she decided to scold her with more self-righteous banter and insist Rebecca should be "glad he's dead."

You can see the screws coming loose in Marty over the next several months, too. It seems everyone "goes crazy" to some extent at some point during this storyline. Todd, Powell, Marty, and Rebecca. But I guess that shouldn't be too surprising; this was an intense story.

It's also funny how Marty is standing there in front of two people - Rebecca, and a guy who raped her - and she apparently has nothing against the rapist. All of her anger is directed at the OTHER person. From this scene, you would think Marty and Powell are friends. Ugh.

Clint talks with C.J. and Sarah about the "bad man" genie. Note how they don't make a huge fuss about defending him right here, though they're questioning what people tell them. After the car accident, though, we'll see them convinced they were right all along and fight tooth and nail for Todd's freedom. These kids are no dummies.

Luna sighting...and pre-SORASed Al. LOL.

Fail: No Todd. Pretty obvious one there. Marty and her whiny, self-righteous rants. The lack of even a hint of anger from Marty toward Powell. Powell continuing to be "Mr. Wonderful" as he defends his girlfriend. Awwww, how sweet. Not.

  1. As much as I love Marty, to this day, I did not like what she became from the time of the death of Suede through to the time when she and Todd made peace. I know that's a long stretch, but her vengeance against him was pretty heavy at times and made her a little unlikeable. I did LOVE her turnaround though, during the "Hospital Rapes" story. However, it took a LONG TIME for her to be tolerable where he was concerned. Of course, he wronged her terribly, but in many ways, he paid over and over' his life was no cushion...especially after he saved her and was pardoned.

Yeah, for the life of me what I could never understand was why she seemed to hate him EVEN MORE after he saved her life and apologized to her. I suppose that might be WHY she hated him more - he blurred the line for her when he became the only reason she was still alive and showed her the other side of him. It was much easier to just hate him as "pure evil" when all he'd done was rape her and kill Suede.

Still, one would think her animosity would have declined at least a little after his efforts. Fortunately, I've never been in her position, so maybe I don't fully understand, but that's just how I see it.

  3. So, finally caught up on a week's worth of missed clips.

Yeah. I love Marty, and on one hand I cannot fault her feelings about Todd at this point, or the near maniacal rage she feels toward him, because at this point in the tale he really has gotten away with it. Not that he hasn't suffered some, but still, he's running around free as far as Marty believes while she feels trapped in the prison he made for her.

On the other hand, I think this is the point where people started calling her "Martyr" Saybrooke, and this clip is an example of why. It's not fair to her really, because what we all saw of Todd over the preceding weeks and months wasn't what she knew of him, and even if she had seen it, she was still an open wound at this point, so it wouldn't have mattered.

But why Todd? Why not Powell? Todd was obviously the more aggressive, the more naturally prone to anger and violent resolution, at least, so far. Was it just the sheer volume of aggression and rage and fear he had poured onto and into and around her for months? Maybe. I suppose this will be a controversial thing to say but I was struck by Marty's accusation that Rebecca loved Todd BECAUSE he was evil, that she got off on it. I think there's sow truth to that, for sure. But I also wonder if she isn't projecting just a little. There history--even this early on--was always one of jabs and punches, then circling for awhile, then attacking again. It is, in many ways, a very sensual dance and one Todd himself has always seemed to relish. The previous clip of the garden shed kiss is a prime example. Loved the little smirky 'tude he got as he realized he was affecting her. She was afraid, but she liked it. We saw that same dynamic replayed with both Blair and Tea later as well. The more they fought him, the harder he hung on, the more he dug in and wouldn't let go.

I guess my point is that, to me, at least some of Marty's anger is because she kind of enjoys fighting with Todd. She likes her own anger, but she's reformed Marty now who can't freely express that the way she used to. But with Todd she has free reign. She can fully express her own "evil" without fear of any social reprisal. And I guess Rebecca kind of screws up that delusion. Because if Rebecca is good and she finds something good and lovable in Todd, doesn't that mean that maybe he's not just the monster she needs him to be?

Fail: Why is Powell even there? Go away, Captain America.
