Todd thinks of life on the outside and it includes the kids and Rebecca!

Love these scenes when he is contemplating freedom. "Even if I walk out of here, I'm going to another prison, it's just another kind."

I adore this man, Roger Howarth, he pulls off just about anything including long hair. His reactions to Rebecca....so perfect. He's unreal. Of course, he's flawlessly beautiful as well.

What do you think of this clip?

FAIL: Powell shows up at Marty's house. Uh, no. Even to tell her about Todd's possible pardon, it's ridiculous. He is JUST AS GUILTY as TODD. I can't say it enough.

This clip today picks up where we left off previously in our daily clip discussions!  ANYONE is welcome to join in and add their info, thoughts, analysis, etc.  Thanks to bjujubee for the opportunity to still see these.



Marty is approached by Ray, Todd's therapist. JUST LOVE THIS. LOVED Ray and Todd.

"You can put this down on my report card. Works and plays well with others." Roger is so utterly gorgeous here, and so bitter and so strong. He's unreal. I adore him and his creation, Todd Manning.

This therapy stuff with Ray is amazing. They should have delved into this more, and I wish now, with the brainwash stuff/torture/past abuse. Roger would kill that story.

Isn't he beautiful when he says "I don't want to talk about my mother...."

What are your thoughts? I always saw Bitsy as a poor parent also, for leaving Todd behind with an abusive man. Not everyone agrees on that.

What a perfect starting point this was for our return to the Clip of the Day discussions. This is the start to one of the most powerful Todd and Marty scenes ever. She does end up coming to the jail to participate in this joint therapy idea. And, the outcome is none too pleasant for Todd. Roger and Susan are both perfection here.

FAIL: I can't think of one for these scenes, I just love them too much.

Clip of the Day, July 22, 2011 (254)

I cannot stand POWELL trying to talk with Marty and make things ok. He did the SAME THING Todd did, only in my book, he was worse. He KNEW what he was doing was wrong, and he could have saved her and didn't. He is responsible for it just as much. SO SICKENING.

I LOVE when RAY tells TODD about his past....and what it all meant to him. Fantastic stuff. If anything made a difference for Todd relating to Ray, it was this. The whole therapy thing is AWESOME and would have been SO GREAT if it went even deeper.

Roger and this HAIR....omg, it's so beautiful, and so is he.

When Ray goes to see Marty, he attempts to explain to her how he needs her to be part of the therapy and she turns him down flat. Of course, we know it leads to one of the best and most powerful scenes (and I say ONE of them because there are many) between Marty and Todd (the REAL ONE of course).

I love this clip. I was thinking this morning, look how far "Todd" came from this brooding, messed-up kid who went (in Luna's words) "very wrong."

Also, the engagement party scene....I just realized that yesterday's clip had one of my VERY FAVORITE SARAH LINES: "You're gonna marry POWL?" LOL! Loved that kid.

Marty, still in her sadness, Beth died, you can hear the nervous laughter of HBS in the background. Rebecca
announces her engagement to Marty.....etc.

"If I ever heard a story that didn't want to to away, this is it," says Clint. Reminds me of TODD himself. The character just won't go away because of Roger, of course. Regardless of what people say, TSJ made the character his own MESS, and ... never really was Todd to begin with.

I just adore Roger's portrayal of Todd at all the stages we've seen, including the current one. The ability of the CHARACTER, however, to change and grow, I attribute to Rebecca's love, and later, in a larger sense, Blair's love and his love for BOTH of them and his daughter Starr. Those things transcend the brutality of his actions and of his experiences, and transform Todd in different ways. What's your take on that? Chime in!

High points of this clip: Ray comes to Todd's aid after a nightmare. Todd asks if Ray can really "fix him." I love that, later, he does the Fix Me thing as well. Todd writes a letter to Rebecca....."You told me I shouldn't give in to this place." Todd discusses the women in his life as a young boy. "It's like they weren't even people...Women, they're fake." The way his voice gets when he talks about his mother and Rebecca. Sigh.

All this leads to a heartbreaking encounter with Rebecca....coming soon in the clips.

Well, Powell marries Rebecca (or wants to) simply because he cannot let Todd have her or be near her, or have hopes with her, but throughout this story, as Powell unravels, Rebecca just cannot shake The Man.

Powell: I'm not mad, I'm not crazy.

Ok.

Powell just SAYS to her that he is asking her to marry him so that he can keep anything about Todd from coming between them. Uh, Rebecca, that was a sure sign that you needed to run. So was the shirt tucked in to his pants, but that's another issue I guess.

Rebecca's face when he asks. LOL!

@3:30 - just look at those eyes. OMG. I love when Ray comes in, "you wanted to see me, Todd?" and he just sits there staring. By the way, not sure you can request your therapist in jail. Anyway. . .

As Roger relates Todd's panic over feeling rage, you are SUCKED IN further (kind of wonder how far we will be sucked in without disappearing into the screen). First of all, if he is not beautiful with that hair and those eyes, then no one is. But beyond that, Roger's acting is light years ahead of Sean's and Reiko's at this point, and more in line with the already-vets.

"I feel like I'm gonna explode, or do something crazy, to hurt him, or me, somebody (eyes to camera), anybody." OMG! Just think of what it must be like to bring that kind of emotion to something with a series of cameras right in front of you. Roger makes it look so simple and so real.

Love Rebecca being unsure, and we all know why, don't we??

Powell: No way she says yes, no way. Maybe you should take off that gay shirt, it might help.

OMG, the scene following Powell ruminating over Rebecca's answer is unreal. Todd is so raw there, Ray is so strong, it's perfect, so well done. Thank you Roger for things like this that you created and crafted.

"I don't want to stay like this anymore!"

"Then change!"

His last few sentences about the anger winning are GORGEOUS. WE can see first hand why he's an Emmy winner at such a young age. Tremendous acting, unique facial features, and a vulnerable angst that just won't quit, not to mention some great hair.

Watching Todd here....I just cry inside for the demise of this show. WE do have OLTL to thank for the hours of beautiful, gorgeous stuff we've gotten from this man, from day 1.

We learn so much in a few sentences. He cannot handle the intimacy or the connection between him and someone else. He flees from Ray after the shoulder touch, of course, we now know why he's like that, but it was such a gorgeous mystery and amazing to watch unfold as we got to know him more.

I love Rebecca's commitment to Todd. Powell is shattering before our eyes (yay) but she's totally glued. She wants to help and support him, etc. Powell goes and VISITS TODD! LOL! The bitterness between them, both having done the same crime, and one's life shattered while the other is picking up with privilege, great idea on the part of the writers. Later, the tides will turn.

Love how Renee stands by Rebecca without judging her...now that is a real "Mom." Even when Rebecca tries to convince herself she is in love with Powell Lord the Turd.

Todd is in the right here, he has told Rebecca to leave him alone, he has told her to forget him...and like us, she just can't.

Another day to comment on the work of the great Roger Howarth.



The thing about OLTL that worked best during the original Todd years was that so many of the characters were AWESOME. You may not have LOVED Sheila and Hank, but if you didn't, you had Ray Martino and Todd....or Vicki and Clint, Jessica, CJ, Cord, Max, Luna. I can go on and on and on about this.

Now, the therapy scenes with Todd and Ray have to be among the best that OLTL produced. "I had a good mother, I had a jerk for a father....so what?" WOW. The understatement of the century. These scenes not only show the talent of the actors, especially Roger, but the inner workings of Todd's mind, his experiences and why we end of falling for the guy. I remember being so engrossed in Roger's story, and when it was starting to be revealed that he may have been abused as a child, I couldn't "not love him" anymore.

"Imagine that CJ and Sarah were given to your father for him to raise. What would have happened to them?"

"Nothing."

"Nothing? I mean it's all right with you, no big deal?"

"Nothing because I never would have let my father anywhere near those kids. I would do anything I had to stop that."

"You survived your father. Why wouldn't the kids?"

"Those kids are nothing like me. [ . . . ] They're innocent, and way too trusting. I mean, look who they looked after? Me. Nah, my father. He would have . . ."

"Your father would have what?"

"He would have crushed them. Especially Sarah."

"Why?"

"He hates women." He says with that gorgeous face and androgynous hair. "And his son. Women and his son, that's who my father hates."

SO MUCH is said here. In these lines, we're discovering almost EVERYTHING about this enigma that is Todd Manning. Most likely, those of us who could NEVER accept TSJ as Todd were thinking of moments just like these. And Zorro, of course!

Important line: "When I saw how much he hated me, I tried to change. I tried to be just like him." Speaks volumes, doesn't it? It almost makes us understand everything that is happening and everything seems to fall into place where Todd is concerned. And Roger makes us BELIEVE it all.

Of course, he's TOTALLY BEAUTIFUL here, there's nothing to compare with this kind of work.

When Ray touches his shoulder, we see something switch in him for that moment. And of course, we are dying for the next scene so we can learn more. Anything to excuse the love we're developing for this guy.

Yes, after a month's hiatus, we're back with the daily clips of Roger Howarth's Todd Manning Story. Thanks to juju for the clips, hope that she reigns victorious over recent computer issues.

Today's clip:



Oh my, I missed these two little beauties.

"YES WE DO!" Sarah yells at Powell. GO GIRL GO. Imagine if they could have found this original little actress to come back to be Sarah. But, we are fortunate to get Erin Torpey back before the end of OLTL.

It's so hard to write about these clips right now, knowing full well that soon, they will be literally ALL WE HAVE of this show. One Life will be missed so much.

The thing about these vids is that it's awesome. It's not altogether dated, and Roger is just amazing; we are watching him blossom and grow. Rebecca is torn, as we were. We wanted to love him and also knew we should find him revolting...but couldn't. We can identify with Rebecca so much because he made us love him, and we didn't want to do it!!!

The kids are so adorable. So unassuming and so innocent in their love for him. They cannot see his past, they can only see his present, and that he was a hero to them. You HAVE to love this clip because it has so many old faces in it. Sheila, Hank, Marty, Jessica (original), etc. Just a nice blast from the past. There is no Todd in this one, but it's a great place to start back up - with so many of the old beloved characters right there for the viewing. Next clip: Ray (yes) and Todd in prison therapy.

Way behind in these, I guess the excitement of FINALLY SEEING HIM BACK has gotten to me. But we cannot neglect the facts, we need to know his history and keep it alive as well. Thanks to JUJU for these great moments we can cherish. Chime in guys about your fave parts, greatest lines, moments you love. That was the original purpose of the blog in the first place!



Love the whole "Free Todd Manning" campaign that the kids came up with! It's really a great way the writers got Todd out of jail. Powell talks about Todd as if he himself never did anything wrong.

I love Zach's behavior here. He's so good, too. He really did get the shaft.

Todd did not commit suicide, after all, he thought about it but did not do it. He got a letter from the kids and changed his mind. Actually, he's in debt to them for his life following this escapade.

This is a great "ep." I love all of it, except for Powell's crappy attitude and his ridiculous over-acting regarding Todd's villainy and his own innocence. Gag. I guess we will never get over the fact that Powell was just as guilty and we will never be able to accept that he just felt like he was special.

"Rebecca please help us with the genie!" LOL. The little voice and cheeks on Sarah!

"Would you let three people die?"

"Depends."

I always said Zach was more of a sociopath than Todd was. LOL.

I love how he wants to "stick around and see what that feels like!" concerning Sarah and CJ's devotion. So great.



Are you friends with Todd Manning? We're his BESTEST friends!

The newspaper is next for these two. LOVE IT.

Todd gets Zach to call Rebecca to tell her that the letter is false and that he's not dead. This is a good twist anyway, because it leads to her finding out that he was thinking of committing suicide. Hee hee. She's SO UPSET when she thinks he was going to kill himself. Love it. Powell walks in. He's SO AGGRAVATING. GET LOST.

Powell is starting to seethe. And it's a pretty good twist the writers are leading up to. Mr. Perfect and....well, you all know what he does.

And Zach, brings me back to him, I still say he's the worst of the three - never had a bit of remorse and Todd's right, he never knew what he'd done, but Todd was starting to find out slowly but surely, what he had done and what it meant. Oh by the way, just love him with the little strand of hair falling.



I am putting this one up also, it's like a third piece of this whole little plot, so I included it today. Todd becomes upset when he sees that the kids are campaigning for him. He calls the kids, a little farfetched, but he does. And lets them know they should not continue the petition. "I'm not worth it."

He sits a lot with the little man in his hand. Poor Todd. The show was REALLY MILKING IT.

He gets visited by Llanview Live, and also, the assistant to the District Attorney. But Todd's not buying it; he's not a hero in his own eyes. He's starting to accept the things he has done and see their implications. He wants to protect the kids and accept himself as a "bad guy." A big step for him. This whole saving Marty story was the turn around in a major way for this character.

FAIL: Powell. My goodness, did they WANT us to hate this guy, because it's working!

Clip of the DAY, May 10, 2011 (237)

Trying this on my new xoom tablet for the first time. I'm using text to talk, So will see how this goes. In this case, Todd literally has no one, except maybe Zach. I always find their scenes interesting.

The thing I love about this scene is how Todd reveals who he is without realizing - we start understanding that he does not want to live. He does have remorse - not a sociopath. Todd - we love you.

He actually tells Zach his plan.

Powell wants to write a book ... "about what happened to all of us last Spring." Uh, ok.

The whole Powell thing gets so out of control whenever they want to make a comparison between the two of them. "what happened to all of us?" He's considering himself Todd's victim. Whatever.

Hard writing about this today because 1) I have stitches in my shoulder and it hurts and 2) I am so excited about Friday!

Clip of the Day, May 9, 2011 (236)

Roger hits another home run here. First his hopeful reaction when he learns Peter is here...and then his reaction as his hopes are crushed (as he's obviously somewhat expecting, even in the beginning). Then the choking back tears and fighting to get the words out.

And let's not omit the evidence of conflict within Peter Manning as he mentions Todd "running off to be with his mother." You can tell that really bothers him; he felt Todd betrayed him for a woman he now hated. Peter's not entirely one-dimensional...he DOES care, but he's too selfish, bitter, and holds too much of a grudge to move past anything. These traits rubbed off on Todd, but Todd is still young and underwent life-changing events.

It's easy to just refer to Peter Manning as a miserable jerk (which he was), but I've never agreed with those who want to characterize him as feeling nothing but pure anger and hatred toward Todd. There were several moments of subtlety in both the writing and the actor's portrayal that demonstrated otherwise. In the long run, he was completely thrown under the bus during the Kale Browne Sam days, but I never thought this set of writers' intentions were to go the sexual abuse route. I guess future writers thought Todd needed even more of an excuse than he was already given for his behavior, but I think it's enough that Todd's adoptive dad was verbally and physically abusive. Not to mention, there's no excusing it, anyway. Todd has to live with what he did and own up to it.

Todd reflects on everything that recently happened, but note how it's all the negatives. It logically sets the stage for what's about to happen (or almost happen).


FAIL: None.

May 8, 2011 Clip of the Day, (235)

I love this...he apologizes his second time to Marty. So...Roger. His voice cracks a little when he calls to her the last time. He's the best. And she's DEFINITELY AMAZING and deserves every credit she has ever gotten. She does a mean cry!

His interactions with Nick Manzo just totally show that sarcastic, biting edge that he has always had, even into the 2000s.

He gets back, Zach is a prison trustee. Heh. Clean shaven. Mmmm. Another look for the man. Gorgeous and somehow sweeter, I think that's important for the direction the story is going to take for a while.

The talk with Zach somehow irritates me. But of course, it leads to his real suicide thoughts and he gets saved by an unlikely source.

Those beautiful arms. I shouldn't be so shallow but I cannot help it.

Some hardened criminal. Comes back to town because of a girl, and gets put back in jail by saving three lives.

Clip of the Day, May 7, 2011 (233 and 234)

Don't call me that, look, I'm not a hero, I'm nothing. Cue music. Sigh.

How can ANYONE NOT LOVE THIS MAN?

Roger does JUST WHAT HE HAS TO to create our love for Todd at an even deeper level....pity, and the need to help him. LOL. Always goes a long way.

Ah, Real Jessica. What a loss to OLTL. She was great. I love how she counsels Marty in her own way.

Just realized, Roger's going to be clean shaven soon after these scenes. Anyway he looks is ok with me.



I ADORE this confrontation between them. My god, the emotion and the tension...in so many ways, this was the greatest pairing for the drama aspect.

"No, why would he give that to me, like you said, it's important to him. Every kid needs a hero, even if it ain't real." OMG.

Marty: "I just want to say THANK YOU." If that was not the most well-executed line she's ever said...nothing is. All the hate behind it and the pain and the words are so juxtaposed to her feelings. Awesome. Susan rocks the screen opposite Roger. But then, who doesn't? I can think of one who WON'T. But that is a different time period, kids.

At the end of this clip, he does not know what to do with her gratitude and her pain. At one point, he turns away, as if it's too painful to watch, and it is, but we as viewers cannot look away.

I adore you, Roger, I wish you were reading all my declarations of love so you would come back faster.

I love this clip. It speaks for itself really, but the star is Tyler Noyes, who carries his own diminutive weight.

Cord is SO GREAT in these. I loved him as a Dad. You have to LOVE IT when little CJ sneaks into Todd's room and tries to talk with him. He's so adorable!!! I love Roger in scenes with kids, animals, things, people....uh, I guess I just love Roger in scenes.

The conversation between them is AMAZING. It almost seems like CJ is in charge of this scene but that's Roger's talent showing through, knowing when to back down and let go. Love it.

I just ADORE THIS:

"HEY, something I wanna say to you. I don't know you at all, but I know Sarah and I know CJ, and you got two great kids. Do yourself a favor, when they screw up, tell them they're ok, that you love 'em. And when they need you, you be there for em. It's too easy for kids to slip away, for them to go astray."

OMG! I have seen this, maybe 30 times, and I STILL CRY. Amazing. This clip also shows the start of the Bo conversation that I just love also!

FAIL: Nothing. No Powell, no sticky stuff....

Clip of the Day, May 3, 2011 (229)

Time once again to thank Juju for her hard work in putting up Todd's story. Oh boy, working our way up to my fave scenes in this story arc, with Bo, Cord, and CJ. Whoo hoo!



Lyme disease comment - very cute. Bo explains how he enjoyed the police work he was involved in. Marty and Jess try and understand Todd's actions. Not going to happen! LOL!.

How can anyone not adore the music they used when Todd is in his bed, and Rebecca comes to see him? Love all the musical themes they play for him. I wonder if there is ANY CHANCE they will use them upon his return? I love these scenes.

I love also how a story arc in the days of OLTL's greatness included A LOT OF CHARACTERS, however they found a way to bring them in. Clint Ritchie. My goodness, gone too soon. And he's wearing that Western type of suit. Wow.

This whole clip is setting up for the next one, where Cord is not paying attention and CJ runs off to talk to Ali. Clip 230. One of my faves!

FAIL: Nothing, really, they don't overdo the Powell here, so it's all right I guess, but every moment he's on irks me...so....

Clip of the Day, May 2, 2011 (228)

The interaction between Todd and Bo at the start of this scene is QUITE SUSPECT on the part of Bo, who, suddenly, realizes (without his knowledge even) who Todd really is. He was right, in his gut, that Bo Buch. A messed up kid. He's seeing the light at last. However, his times in conflict with our boy are not over, but his view of Todd definitely changes here. I love that. His response to what could be Todd's last few moments on Earth are.....if you watch carefully...very telling about who both of them are. I always saw Bo as a "wanna be" father to Todd, and, at the same time, I saw Todd as a man who saw Bo as a father figure, even though they never were friends.

I always loved that scene, where Bo literally comforts Todd and tries to hear out his last words (possibly) to Rebecca.

Back at the hospital, love these scenes that transpire with Vicki, Clint and HIS DAUGHTER Jessica. Love Erin T. This was a great story, pitting Clint against Sloan. Awesome soapy stuff....loved original Clint and Vicki.

LOVE REBECCA when she REACTS to TODD'S SHOOTING...Powell is NOT HAPPY. LOL! I adore her LOOK when he says "He asked me to tell you that he was sorry." Marty is SMH! LOL! Rebecca is CLEARLY STILL IN LOVE WITH OUR BOY!!

Of course during the operation to save Todd's life, he dreams of Rebecca. So gorgeous, the whole thing. LOVE THIS SHOW!!! Cannot believe, still, that we are losing OLTL. IT's too much to fathom. He made it through the surgery and now, onto some of my FAVE SCENES that include Todd, Bo and CJ. YAY!

FAIL: I'll say nothing in this one. Except PLEASE...it's a FAIL that we don't have more contributions...so CHIME IN!

Clip of the Day, April 30, 2011 (225, 226, 227)

C.J. spills the beans to Rebecca. I love it. Now she can't hide from it...she really has no choice but to get back in his corner after this.

Todd always winds up in the woods. It's a recurring theme that I think has some ties to certain Biblical elements in Malone's writing. It's one of the things I love about this era; the Malone/Griffith team combined classical concepts rooted in literature from hundreds of years ago with ground breaking socially conscious/verite style concepts. You get the best from both worlds.

Typical frustrating hospital stuff Cord is dealing with.

Marty confirms what C.J. told his babysitter, Rebecca.

Oh my God, what a PERFECT line from Bo about Todd. "I'm telling you that Todd Manning can make you think he's going one direction when he's really going the other." Can you say, "double entendre?" And the thing is, Bo knows what happened at this point (as we find out soon)...so his comment was partly the result of that knowledge. Todd "went in a different direction" in more ways than one.

Writing, folks. Writing.

Everybody tied into this story now that Jessica's involved. Love it.

Oh my, look at this Bo/Todd standoff, with Bo so close to Todd without actually knowing it (but maybe sensing it in his gut). LOL!!! Nick Manzo, "not too many Caucasian males with long hair." See that look on Powell-the-Pure's face? That's the look of a dastardly guy realizing he lost his last advantage over his biggest enemy.

Hahahaha!!!!!! Keystone Kops, Go! I love how they found an RH lookalike (probably just happened to be walking by the studio in New York) for an "extras" role in this. I'll bet you this guy would make a better Todd than Trevor St. Jawn, LOL.

"Great, the guy's probably in West Virgina by now." Well, Nick, that WOULD be fitting after your lame "Wheeling, West Virginia" idea a few months ago.

And here we go. Another one of my all-time favorite Todd scenes. I have about 500 of them, true, but this is in there! I LOVE this. The Todd/Bo standoff, with Todd clinging on and Bo literally trying to talk him down.

"Didn't I dig a hole deep enough to die in, yet?" as he is clinging on for dear life with a gun pointed at him. Simply amazing stuff. In this scene you just get this clear look at where he is now...look how far he's come after everything that's happened over the past several months since he first decided he was going to escape prison, and look at this one moment where he's trapped and grimacing with the last fumes of whatever resistance is left in him keeping him from giving up. It's a matter of pride for him, now.

And as we now find out, Bo knows about everything that happened after the accident. But one of the Keystone Kops shoots him down anyway as he was trying to surrender. This stuff is more like a prime television series or a movie than a soap opera. Anyone who hasn't seen the story of 1994 Todd Manning is really missing out on something special, and their life isn't complete until they HAVE seen it. :D


FAIL: Powell with hilarious hypocrisy. "That doesn't make him a Saint!" Nope, it doesn't make him like YOU, Powell, right?
