I don't know how this happened but I must have forgotten to put up TWO clips yesterday....so I will do two today. Besides, I LOVE THIS PART of the story so much.
OMG. Here is where Rebecca starts to realize that she's basically a goner. Todd has a "final solution." It's SO beautifully and painfully unwrapped by Roger here. I think some of us have already discussed what he "really meant" but to me, it's very clear that his intentions were to kill her and turn the gun on himself. It gives me chills thinking about it, since we hear stories like this in the world around us. What do I really think? At the last minute, he would not have been able to take her life. However, I am pretty sure he would have taken his own.
Now onto the clip standout moments. Even as she is crying after seeing the gun and realizing what he means, he comforts her. OMG. No one could have played this QUITE the way Roger did. He's just got the ability to be so much in one minute.
"There is a way for us to stay together. Let's go to the back room." Poor Rebecca, she is so lost here. She's sure that it's the end for them. And she was probably right if not for . . . knock knock knock......POWELL. (WHO SENT HIM???? I mean why not send someone, anyone, else???)
"Your father wants to see you."
"He wants to see me dead. He wants to see me in prison."
"I'm not kidding you, the guy's a total wreck."
Softens. "What's wrong with him?"
These three sentences and how they are delivered say so much. Todd sees his father as hating him, wanting him gone, and at the same time, his first impulse is to ask what has happened to him. Typical abusive parent-child situation.
"Save your soul, Todd."
"You can't save what you don't have anymore." Whoa. He's at rock bottom. I do love this whole thing.
I JUST LOVE when Todd lets Rebecca go. Before he does, you just get the feeling he is going to shoot them, and then...MY MOMENT! He grabs her and kisses her forehead that way he does and if you were not in love yet, it's over now. That forehead kiss and his obvious love for her shows the viewers that he is NOT the monster we think. He's a monster of a different kind, more of a Frankenstien than a Dracula, if you catch my drift. He's not cold-hearted and ruthless, he has compassion and love in him, and Rebecca has put it there. Bravo to these two and LONG LIVE THIS STORY! And if you can think of something more beautiful than this man's face, just let me know what it is.
It almost seems that directly after she leaves, he is resigned to stopping the violence. He lowers the gun, and he starts to TALK and LISTEN to Powell. Yes, ok, he does have his value a LITTLE here. In desperation, there are not many paths he can choose at this point, and it does look bad for him. Rebecca was basically saying that no matter where he ended up, she would be there for him. He knows it is the first time in his life that has happened.
And then . . . BO MAKES NOISE. "YOU SOLD ME OUT!" PETE-ISH. Wow.
I love this whole sequence. Rebecca struggles to call the police and report it. Powell struggles to talk Todd down. Bo screws up and a battle ensues! This is must see TV, as Juju says! We thank her again for her time and commitment to the Todd story.
YES AGAIN, when faced with the choice of SHOOTING POWELL, or not, he chooses not. He engages in a fist fight, while holding a deadly weapon, but does not kill. He does not choose to kill as a first instinct, and not even a last. Has an opportunity to shoot Bo dead, and doesn't. Why? He's just not a killer. He's a pawn of his own pain and torment. CRAZED BUT GORGEOUS at 4:47! Whoo hoo.
During this struggle between Bo and Todd for the "gun" that Powell "sleeps" through, I cannot help but think of two things. Todd, just having been in prison for rape, and Todd on his birthday when he was 14. If you have followed his story, then this scene is particularly upsetting. Of course, the first time watching, you might only glance over the idea of what may have happened to him in jail. However, when watching it AFTER having seen and heard his whole story, it can almost make you sick. He's despairing to get Bo off of him, but basically powerless in his grip. Roger plays it BEAUTIFULLY, almost as if he knew what was coming in his story 5 years down the road. This is why today's viewers have NO CONCEPT of what Todd's own sexuality issues are, and take the current portrayal as an "evolved" Todd. No. Completely erroneous.
Unfortunately, we are interrupted by Marty's reminiscence of Suede. Now, this partially works because it is there to COUNTER what we are ABOUT to see with Todd; to show that he snuffed out a life himself, and therefore, deserves the same. But....I don't know, for me, it interrupted the flow of the story in the cabin and what was unfolding there.
I do LOVE the song though. "Teach Me How To Dream" can still make me teary-eyed on the right day.
FAIL: Two non-law-enforcement people trying to negotiate a hostage situation; it actually working until one of them squeaks a boot; the law enforcement officials being so bad that these lay people HAVE to do this; and Suede in general.

Clip of the Day | Feb. 1, 2, 3 and 4
Wow, did all that time really go by? We all were so absorbed in everything going on, especially me, that I neglected my job. Well, no longer. I promise to do my best.
Forgetting, after all these hours of clips until the 2000s, what he was REALLY LIKE at the beginning of his story, only takes this clip to make you recall. He's vile. He's nasty. He's scary. He's cruel. Yep. It's a wonder WE COULD ACTUALLY LOVE HIM.
Todd is so full of hate here, I am doubting my previous comments about him not really intending to follow through with his threats. Where Marty is concerned, after this scene, I am not so sure. He does always take too long to get around to hurting people with all that terrifying talking he does.
"Oh Suede, thank heavens." Ugh. Ruins my day! Powell does too, I just can't like him until he turns rotten. LOL.
Susan plays terrified so well. After all this time, her acting resonates so clearly in all of her scenes. When I saw her yesterday on OLTL, I cannot explain, I get this overwhelming joy at seeing her on screen! I always loved her work, her character did annoy me a lot, but I enjoyed her acting in her all her scenes, except those opposite Suede.
"He's not the monster everyone says he is!" She's going to have a hard time explaining this to ANYONE after today! Todd's pretty damn strong for a very sick and weak guy! Rebecca was a tad too gullible here.
I love this clip more because Marty stands up for herself against him a bit.
"Ooh cry me a river! I turned you into a frickin' saint!" LOL Todd's logic!
Ok Suede's screaming entrance has to be the funniest moment ever. Well, maybe not, because there is one to follow that cracks me up every time. It's when Suede's head hits the podium in slow motion and his teeth are bucked out a bit in the front. Sorry, but it's hilarious. Todd's a freak in this one, but knows almost instantly that he has made a mistake. It sort of snaps him into reality. He panics, of course, and Roger's expression reveals to us that he knows he has made a fatal mistake. Love his acting in this.
WHY would they BRING REBECCA with them to this???? Ridiculous. How would this have played out if he did surrender? He would have gone back to prison and time would have been added for his actions with Suede. Rebecca's so weird here, she runs in front of him so he won't get shot then starts screaming when he grabs her.....she may have wanted to think about that first.
LOVE Roger when he's panicked here, it's PETE all the way, the tone, the inflection, everything. He's at the edge and the last stop. His frantic ordering of the cops, is the best. "You give me the car or the girl dies." He can't name her, that would be too close to reality of what he's doing.
BEST LINE: "The smartest thing you've done all day! GO GET A DONUT!" OMG, it's so hard to stay hating this guy. Roger just makes you laugh, cry, and shake with fear at the same time. I guess that's why we're in this whole debacle right now with his return rumors. To be honest, as much as I love him and want him back, if we ONLY had these scenes to look at forever, it would not be the end of the world.
The police in these clips have no sense, no rhyme or reason, and don't bother much with the law. This whole stake out and no one goes inside the tabernacle for a long time; Rebecca is allowed to go with Hank and sits in the front seat next to him; Rebecca is allowed to be outside the vehicle so she can break loose and go to Todd; Powell, another felon, is allowed to be on the scene; Powell offers himself as a hostage and is not taken away. I can go on, but why bother. Uh, THEY LET HIM TAKE A POLICE CAR????? SHEESH. I guess it helps the drama unfold, but in the eyes of real lawmen, this would be a comedy for certain. Powell tells them off a bit and ... well....we're sunk! Todd's gone.
Rebecca SCREAMS A LOT. She's pretty good at it, too. Of course nothing matches her later screams when....ok I will be quiet and keep that one a secret unless you did not see it before.
Suede's death is sad because of Susan's work and reaction. Otherwise, sadly, no one cares. I am sorry, but it's probably the truth. Most folks could CARE LESS about Suede in these scenes, as they are hoping for more Nutcase Pete (a.k.a. Todd) on the run with our girl Rebecca.
Poor Marty.....when Suede dies, it's a terrible moment for her, and Susan carries it so perfectly. As usual. Between she and Roger, it's sometimes hard to decide who is holding a scene in the early days. However, I do think he later surpasses her completely in some of his best work in later parts of the story. The fact that they are coming SO LATE to help him.....ridiculous!!!!
I LOVE that Todd has Rebecca in the driver's seat. "Stop your whining, drive!" LOL! Imagine a captor letting the other person drive. "I'm sorry I'm not a good driver!" The banter between these two does get funny at times. I absolutely LOVE the turnaround Rebecca does, when she is giving him dirty looks because he has no clue what to do. "And then what?" Just catch her expression around 7:54. LOL. She stands up to him pretty well throughout when he has the chance. When he turns into "Pete," though, she crumbles and cowers. That is probably the intent.
His voice cracks, "I'm not going back there! I'd die before I'd go back there." Hmm. Sounds like prison was not all it was cracked up to be. I hope, if Roger returns, they do cover what jail did to him, if he undergoes therapy. There is more to this than meets the eye, and that is certain, especially for rapists in prison.
These 4 clips ought to make up for my lack of punctuality! Of course, expect another single clip later today!
FAIL: HANK: "Is this on the up and up?" Um, Hank, if it weren't, why ask? Later, REBECCA: "I want you to agree to two things." Hank has to agree to anything???? She's harboring a fugitive felon! Later again, to Rebecca, "Is he going to try and hurt us?" "He has a gun." LOL. the dialogue between cops and people on OLTL is hilarious. Ok, Marty's delay of running HERSELF to get an ambulance, could that have been a little part of Suede dying? And how about this, "Don't worry about Rebecca. If Todd uses his head, she'll be ok." UGH.
Sound off guys! This is a really high point in the story and coming up - THE CABIN! Please don't make me talk to myself here!

Clip of the Day, January 25, 2011
Another snowy day, going to school late and expecting a storm during assessment week - not so great. Anyway, here's the clip of the day.
OMG. After watching Paul non-stop, seeing this just melts my heart, makes me smile, and just says, wow. First off, how gorgeous can he get as he's trying so hard to be ugly? Second, he's into his manipulative best, doing the faces away from her so we can see and she can't.
"I'm afraid of the anger inside of you."
"Sometimes I'm afraid. Help me, Rebecca."
Who could say no to that? I think this is where we really start to see some of the workings of the tortured Todd that we love. This whole "On the Run" story is an easy one to peg as the opening of some wounds in him.
OMG that hand kiss. Wow. I forgot that, see what watching a 7th time can do??? LOL. Gorgeous.
"There is a kindness inside of him, he's afraid of it." Wow Rebecca, you had him PEGGED.
I do have some confusion here, and that is why he decides to spend the cash on a gun. He was thinking of running away, then he needed the cash for that....and then this gun idea comes up. It conjures quite a few thoughts.
The last scene, the NYE Party, made me so nostalgic I almost teared up. Of course, that's not saying much from this sap, but seeing all of those outstanding characters and actors really made my heart sing. At the same time that everyone is starting anew, Todd is getting a gun from someone. I used to LOVE how the show created those paradoxes.

Todd, Todd, Todd. An eating scene. Is this one of the first ones? He's hilarious when he eats. I can't help but chuckle to myself!
"Go straight to your father and beg for his forgiveness." Sure.
"Go with God." He's about to take off and Powell the Pure comes along. Powell is so aggravating in so many ways, I can barely count them. Ooh, Rebecca, you're playing the lying game, too! Now this is interesting. Ms. Innocent can make up a story like that? Hmmmmmm......she's quite convincing.
Todd's anger makes him incapable of sticking to any plan. He's ready to go off and get Powell, and if Rebecca did not stop him, he would have. His anger is the strongest force within him, and it explains so much about his life and his story. Here, Rebecca appeals for him to talk to her. Will she get lies or some truth?
FAIL: Powell's pants, Powell's jacket. Powell. Suede's outfit as the driver. Sheesh.

Kevin is talking Powell out of finishing college? What sense does that make? A convicted felon will have enough trouble making a life without schooling.
Todd's fabricated stories about Powell in the jail are kind of funny. The fact that Rebecca has met Powell and believes it is - funnier. Todd is being so vile and pitiful here at the same time. When he came to in the ambulance, he saw her face? I think he saw the flashlight! "I don't remember how I got away!" How can she say no to hiding him? Look at that BEAUTIFUL FACE! He gives her his word that he will go away from Llanview as soon as he can. What is his word worth? She's not even really sure and accepts it. Those EYES, I tell ya!
The most INTERESTING MOMENT of this clip, I am sure you'll agree, is when she asks him to pray with her, and for a moment, we, the audience, is not really sure that he's all that against it. The way he says "all right" after her plea. If you watch his face, he's POSSIBLY sincere, or POSSIBLY believing her for that moment. Then...after her prayer, he switches RIGHT BACK to the other Todd and is nasty again. His way of saying "AMEN" takes away your doubt that he's really all that bad. It just affirms that he is!
By the end of the clip, Hank suddenly enjoys the help of Powell! Of course, Powell the Pure!
FAIL: Ok the Marty and Suede scene has to be the worst love scene I have ever seen on OLTL. The look on Marty's face when Suede explains how Southerners make things slow and last is like a kid looking at a scary clown and attempting to smile. It's stomach-turning.

I love it. Rebecca assures Powell that Todd would NEVER come to her, and two seconds later - DUH NUH!
I can't even DEAL with the Suede stuff. Save that for the fail.
Turning point for Rebecca. She goes over the edge. If she didn't have "love" feelings for him, she's starting to. Just the fact that he sneaks up on her and covers her mouth, etc, and she does not get help right away - she's a goner. Am I the only one who is digging the one sleeve thing?
FAIL: The Suede stuff.

Thanks so much to Juju who brightens my days with her vids.
Looks like I really am alone with these commentaries, which is so strange since this is why TRTM was created in the first place.
Well, let's see what Todd's up to today.
I just LOVE it when they fight. LOL. Sorry but Powell looks like such a pansy when fighting. LOL. Powell "thumbs his nose" like the cartoons after Jerry comes in. LOL. Zach takes his apron off when being sent back to cell block, Powell keeps his on. LOL. I love this stuff.
"Listen up Scarface..." Oh it gets better and better. Jerry tries to teach Todd a lesson. In my opinion, a LOT of things had to happen to Todd in jail. With the attitude he carried, I doubt the inmates would ignore him and just leave him alone. He's the typical type who get abused in prison. Surprised that OLTL never "went there" more than a mere cryptic message during his therapy.
Another fight brews, Todd just CAN'T KEEP A LID ON IT CAN HE?? Even though they are fighting, I remember not feeling badly for Powell, but feeling badly for Todd, who had no one. I guess we were supposed to, but it's amazing how Roger transformed the whole character over the short period between his arrest for rape and his subsequent pardon. And I love every moment.
Wait, did Todd have a visitor? It looked like a guy from KAD? I will rewind that and see. Yes he did. Wow, I NEVER NOTICED THAT BEFORE! He actually had a visitor.
Question of the Day: Now an interesting thought occurred to me. Todd has fought Powell on many occasions, in prison a few times, and later, during the Zorro thing. During the Hospital Rapes story, he says that the guy who attacked him was the same guy that attacked him before, he knew because he had the "same moves." Wouldn't that have made him know, right off, who he was fighting with after all that time? Since I have never been in a physical fight, I am not quite sure about that. What do you all think?
FAIL: Suede is pissed at Marty because Powell called her and she did not tell him. LOL. What an aggravating character. How could anyone have thought we'd really care about that guy? Ugh.

Another fight brews, Todd just CAN'T KEEP A LID ON IT CAN HE?? Even though they are fighting, I remember not feeling badly for Powell, but feeling badly for Todd, who had no one. I guess we were supposed to, but it's amazing how Roger transformed the whole character over the short period between his arrest for rape and his subsequent pardon. And I love every moment.
Wait, did Todd have a visitor? It looked like a guy from KAD? I will rewind that and see. Yes he did. Wow, I NEVER NOTICED THAT BEFORE! He actually had a visitor.
Question of the Day: Now an interesting thought occurred to me. Todd has fought Powell on many occasions, in prison a few times, and later, during the Zorro thing. During the Hospital Rapes story, he says that the guy who attacked him was the same guy that attacked him before, he knew because he had the "same moves." Wouldn't that have made him know, right off, who he was fighting with after all that time? Since I have never been in a physical fight, I am not quite sure about that. What do you all think?
FAIL: Suede is pissed at Marty because Powell called her and she did not tell him. LOL. What an aggravating character. How could anyone have thought we'd really care about that guy? Ugh.

Wow are they setting us up for the rest of Todd's life!
Clip opens with my favorite type of young Todd - indignant, innocent and inconsolable. Love it. He's just going OFF like a spouting hot water pipe and just can't stop himself. His loss of control is always fun and engaging. He only stops when PETER yells and says BE QUIET. Todd seems to stop dead in his tracks.
Marty: "My friends!" Yep, exactly what TPTB had in mind! Marty has been redeemed and made friends in Llanview, and now the sky is the limit. Behind her is seething Todd, still bandaged. The Rosens are hugging, Powell's mom is encouraging, and Peter and Todd sit in silence as his father counts down the minutes before he's taken away on his watch. So telling! OLTL used to be fantastic at telling stories in deep levels with minor details. Again, Powell just comes out looking so perfect in this, it really irked me, no matter how much we needed to have that part of the story for the whole Rebecca Rivalry thing. Whoo hoo. Cannot wait for that!
The only thing Peter says to Todd is "try and do your best....(pause)....for once" and walks AWAY leaving Todd alone. Now, I had a strange reaction to Todd watching Zach's father hug him. I cried. I've never cried in this clip ever until now. It just hit me, right then. This is so sad....and Todd just cannot handle the difference between the way he is sent off and the way the others are. He turns this hurt into hate immediately. It's not until later in his life that he can actually show/accept/feel a range of emotions. Love this whole thing, including that dreary, creeping music. Roger's amazing already, and he has not yet begun to fight!
FAIL: Almost nothing until that last few seconds when we have to watch Suede in a tweed jacket, talking to Marty in that annoying drawl. Ugh.

Ok one thing about this, I don't blame Todd for what Powell tried to do to himself, or for Powell's participation in the rape. I don't care how terrible a person's bullying is, you are STILL responsible for your own actions, Powell had a choice. As for the suicide attempt, that was also Powell's choice. Though Todd bears a lot of the guilt for the rape, Powell is responsible for his part in it, and also for his attempt on his own life.
"Cringing, wimpering little Pansy..." I love that line. Roger knew how to deliver those evil moments. When he admits what he did to Nora, he's the most VILE!!!

Another great group of scenes for Susan. :D
No one can argue against Susan's work during this whole story. I love how she says good bye, reliving it but not letting it take her over this time. A big step for the character of Marty.
I wonder if it were David Ledingham's scenes that made TPTB decide to knock off Suede or was it the plan all along? "The whole world is going to look different." Suede was right, it did. Marty's world began to change after Todd was put into Statevsille.
Back at the hospital, our guy is back. He's so falsely self-assured all the time. Peter the Not-so-Great hired new lawyers. Todd's face when he hears there is a full, written confession! Priceless. This really starts that rivalry with Powell off to a strong start. Powell is starting a new lease on life with his move to tell the truth, which starts the Powell the Pure routine, and eventually, well, you know.
Cannot wait to see the Statesville scenes! At this point, we're headed some of the best work!

Powell and Marty continue their talk. Susan really carries the scene, but Sean M. is not that far behind her. The way she talks him into going to prison for what has happened, it's pretty masterful. He's worried about his parents, and she points out that it would hurt them more if he were gone. This writing is expert, but the actors HAVE to be this good to carry it off. Maybe that is why on today's show, we get stupid storylines? Just to make sure they can actually DO IT? Can you picture any of the young set today doing this kind of story to this degree????? I can't. When he drops that gun into her hand, it's like a huge accomplisment. Marty's own flashbacks are also a powerful part of this scene, as if not to let us forget what really happened! How symbolic, when he steps aside and lets her unlock that door. Amazing stuff. I just LOVE her scene alone in that room, when she deals with it all and that is COMING UP NEXT!!
I credit the writers and the actors of course. The perfect combination. Of course, 2000+ shows us what good actors and poor writing does. And, NOW shows us what poor actors and poor writing does. So....the only thing left is to see awesome actors and poor writing??? I don't like that philosophy, but....at least it will have RH there at the helm.
This whole story was fantastic. Let's face it, these actors are totally amazing. Hillary, Kirk, Susan, Sean, Robert, etc....how can you beat it, except to add Roger to that list and Erika. Awesome stuff all around and only one sentence from Suede.
FAIL: Kind of annoyed that this starts the Nora loves Powell campaign, but we need it for the upcoming rivalries.

All I can say right off is, Wow. This clip picks up right where we left off, and Powell's breaking down is extremely effective. Susan has a great delivery here too, the brimming tears in her eyes - she always seemed to master that and make them just sit there and sparkle somehow, between the two of them in these scenes, I can't decide who is better. Maybe there is no answer to that. "Ask me, just ask me! Go ahead, ask me!" AMAZING. Compare this to today's "teen set" made up of a teen, 20 somethings and an occasional 30 year old, and you get squat. The powerful stories with appropriate, outstanding craftspeople make today's stuff pale in comparison.
My fave parts are when Marty says she forgives him and when she is talking him down, explaining how she's felt about hurting herself, etc. Of course, she almost gets the gun away from Powell and then . . .
FAIL: Suede at the door pounding and yelling. Who INVITED THAT GUY????

Just an FYI, I updated yesterday's clip also. :D
If anyone can watch this clip and not feel something for Sean M's character, they are dead. The desperation, the pain and the way this whole thing unravels, is absolutely perfect. I think it is one of my favorite parts of The Spring Fling aftermath, The Scar storyline, and 1993. Marty just reveals herself as a caring person, and I believe, this is the final step in totally redeeming her character, aside from the rape she endured.
"I have never lied to you Powell." Love it.
A couple of other things I love about this clip: Marty's first reaction to being in the room again with Powell. When he points the gun at her and tells her to stay away. When Marty tells him she knows what he wants to tell her. When Marty tells Powell that she once tried to kill herself, too. Very good part of this story, and works a bit with Powell. He starts to agree with her then....."Whenever you're ready, whatever you want to say!"
Again, have to mention the MAJOR difference in the story compared to where I really am right now in it (I dunno, 5th time through?) during Todd and Tea 1997....of course NOTHING compares to juju's edits, but I have to see something! LOL! Then, I guess, hard to admit, I start again or choose the Paul stuff, or just start watching The Real Todd. guess we will see.
FAIL: Ok....Suede screaming "Marty, Marty" - just makes me want to farty. Cut it OUT!! Ugh, who brought this guy along?

The flashbacks continue for Powell, and Sean M.'s acting talent emerges....at least for us to see. It's one of those scenes that we feel like we should not be watching. When Kevin and Nora get there, the whole thing begins.
What I really LOVE about OLTL in the 90s in the real drama, the details and the acting. Those three things together made for powerful stories that speak right to you. My fave lines from this clip: "Nora, we can't let this happen." "He realized he didn't want to die so much as he didn't know how to live anymore." "Marty has a much bigger heart than you give her credit for."
FAIL: My least favorite line in this clip: "Like Luna says, listen to your heart." Gag.

Hello all! Time to see another of Juju's clips - Thanks to Ju.
Well a lot of this clip iswasted on spent with Marty and Suede.....meh. Which brings me to . . . Todd in the mirror. There's so much there. He's realizing his life is basically over, and he's going to be scarred by it for the rest of it. When he hears Peter the Hate's voice in his head in this scene, I get chills. We're being set up for something amazing, the unfolding of this once-unnamed character. He drops the mirror and it shatters. I thought right away of mirrors throughout his stories, the shattered one with a bullet hole during the Hospital Rapes one, the Gold Balloon wedding shatter, there are probably more. Sometimes he saw himself distorted in them. Powell also looked into mirrors a lot throughout these stories. Symbolically, a character is "taking a look at himself," "seeing the reflection or reverse of himself" or "symbolically 'seeing' himself" when doing this. These writers were amazing; today's are subpar. Even if you can't relate to that kind of thinking, when that mirror shatters, we know Todd is shattered and so is his life, at least for the time being.

The John Mellencamp music is the perfect backdrop because it was "the sound of the time" - we hear more similar sounds to this during the Zorro time....it was that early 90s twang in "rock." Ah, Peter the Hate is here. More insight into why Todd's Todd. Hope you're all having a good weekend. Love to hear from some of you about these clips, I am starting to get a complex from talking to myself. *wink*
Well Marty's done it, Zach is p.o.'d (and should be) and Peter the Hate is pacing back and forth trying to salvage things. What amazes me here is how the writers were setting up things that would continue for years with this character. Todd is one of the most complex, multi-layered and loved/hated characters I can think of in daytime. Part of it is the outstanding writing he was given to create this character with. The rest of it is just pure talent. In these scenes, the writing is just perfect. They are creating, with or without knowing, the stage for Todd's own past that will later come down on him hard throughout his story. Peter, with his degrading, cruel approach to everything, turns Todd into a child whenever he is in the room. The child who longs to please and do what makes Daddy happy. We all know the reason now, but it's somehow subtly there, before they even knew it and before Roger knew it fully. And still, he creates that abused personae this early on. "Don't you ever get caught off guard? That happens in business, right?" "To some men." UGH. He's such a nasty piece of work, it's amazing there's any good in Todd at all. Right here, Peter makes Todd flinch at least three times! Mr. Tough can never stand up to the likes of Daddy Dearest. I remember that my heart broke a little for Todd every time Peter came on the scene. I know it was intentional, and they did it right, just giving us little teeny tidbits, slowly, one at a time, to add to the pile of pain.
Powell (Sean M.) is going to really be my focus for the next couple of clips. First, he's completely juxtaposed to Todd, and it is intentional, to get that whole rivalry going even before Rebecca shows up. But, his melting apart is just compelling. "If I got to get one wish, just one, I'd wish I could be like you." He's completely falling apart and we're watching. I remember feeling like I did not belong watching a lot of these upcoming scenes. Sean M. is riveting as the disintegrating Powell. It's amazing work that is complimented by Susan and Hillary throughout. Here, we know what Nora (dimwitted?) doesn't see. Powell's not planning to turn himself in, he's planning to DO himself in. And, his voice is cracking A LOT in these scenes! "Believe me Nora, a lost cause." And then that ultra dramatic music plays. These writers DESERVED all of the accolades they got (see SPOTLIGHT ON... for just a smattering of the awards and nominations). At this point, the show was more than entertaining, it was enthralling...and it just gets better.
FAIL: Nora does not realize Powell's going to hurt himself. Duh. Other than that, no faults here. Amazing work by all of the cast and Suede hardly says a word. Whew.

Hi all....this is the start of one of my favorite series of scenes.....Sean Moynihan completely dominates the next few episodes, in my opinion!
Powell is A MESS here and this is my favorite series of scenes that he ever did on OLTL. Yes, I like these better than the "black t-shirt" guy. I thought that the level of acting here, between he and HBS and SH, were just the pinnacle of his work. I always enjoyed this part of the story, but did not particularly like the outcome, when he was treated as if he were superior to the other two....I think the character of Nora carried that a little too far. However, this stuff we're about to relive ROCKS.
Back in the hospital, our boy Todd is still trying to get out of this. I am slightly confused about how this tape will be admissible evidence in court because the police had nothing to do with it???? But, he is snagged. Zach is losing his bearings also as he realizes what is happening. Peter Manning bullies his way into the room....in time to hear what is going on for himself. We can only guess what his reaction to Todd will be.
FAIL: Suede's expression after the hug...ugh.
AND...drumroll...the big fail ... Just a bit of fun here....when I do these commentaries, I stop the video, write, start again, stop and write, etc. I stopped it RANDOMLY at one point and could not believe the results of the stoppage.....so I posted it here as a screencap. The fail is THIS EXPRESSION while wearing this shirt in response to Marty's telling the Scooby Crew that she got the confession:

"She was sayin' stuff. She was taunting me." Todd, you're a goner. I guess what I loved most about this part of the story is that it forces a change to eventually come over this character. When Marty finally gets the upper hand, Todd loses everything. He's at ground zero. He has to start over, sort of, and it takes a very long time, but eventually, he does start to realize things about himself and start to change. This is precisely why real Todd fans have trouble with today's version. Would he have done the things he's done to Marty after what they have been through and the times they have reconciled their differences? Probably not. It's not true to character. One thing we can say about Roger is that he made sure that he was true to character and how Todd was meant to be written, enough to sometimes leave the show to make it happen. "Arrest her! Do your job!" LOL. He has to crack you up here, and it's intentional. He looks so stupid now, his nasty self revealed. Even Zach realizes it's too late for the three of them.
In the opposing scene, Powell is walking like he has a load in his pants. But. the interesting thing here is how the writers (I bow down to the writers of Todd's story until 1998 departure) have put juxtaposed themes in the two scenes. Here's one guy, still hanging on to his lies, the cover up, the blame outside himself, and another guy completely falling apart because of guilt. This is the start of Powell and Todd being polar opposites throughout the rest of their parallel stories. Right now, Powell's the victim and Todd's the victimizer; P = guilt ridden and T = fear ridden; Powell we're supposed to feel sorry for and Todd we're supposed to loathe, and it worked all around. Again, these scenes are the start of my FAVORITE Sean M. work. The poor guy has not worked much over the years and I am still upset that they killed him off before Roger came back. You HAVE to love Sean M. when he tells Nora what happened....gorgeous stuff. At the same time, across town, Todd has a confession too, but it's so different from Powell's (intentional). The two men's lives are very oppositional throughout the rest of the story and it makes for great storytelling. Of course, the winner in the end is Todd, who comes out victorious and "redeemed" later and also, the more popular one of the two.
This is a great clip, shows so much in so short a time.
FAIL: Nothing really, Suede doesn't talk. LOL.

Clip of the Day, Nov. 24
So tired from cooking!
Todd loses it again....he just can't seem to get control over those emotions of his, especially ANGER. In this scene, I always loved how Marty got him to say exactly what she wanted him to say. To me, this is when his story made the first turn....and we're in for a great ride.
Marty is still terrified of Todd, even though he's in the hospital out of commission, and she just keeps pushing until she gets what she wants!! YES! I loved his admission. His vileness just poured out of him....and somehow it HAD to happen to keep him on the show! When he admits what it was like to rape her, it's just chilling, and he does himself in! Todd tries to turn the tables on Marty and it just doesn't work this time. And, one of my favorite lines, "I want that guy out of here right now, he's annoying the hell out of me!" That is what I felt like too!!
Meanwhile, Powell is totally cracking. You gotta love Sean M. in this part of the story. These scenes coming up are my favorite scenes that he has done.
Ok Suede and Zach in a fight, LOL at some of that! See fail!
FAIL: Suede's cowboy boots did him in, he almost fell down and cracked himself in the head....oh wait, that comes later!
