It was reported by We Love Soaps TV at twitter that Kassie DePaiva cried during her interview yesterday....ugh, I can just feel the loss of this show in the pit of my gut. It's almost over and done with now, and so painful.
I guess it's winding down. It is interesting to me that after about 35 years of watching soaps, I am now connected to a totally different one than when I started. GH was my soap for years. OLTL was also a show I did watch regularly, but not as faithfully as GH, mostly because as a kid, we got home in time for GH not OLTL. In summers, OLTL was also part of the routine. I grew up with Viki, Joe, Wanda, Larry....and later, Clint, Bo, Asa, Nora, Todd, and Blair.
Can this be possible? In scouring the old clips for some nostalgia, I watch as Dorian thinks she has breast cancer and spends a "final fling" in NY with Jason Webb (ah Jason) and touches his scar on his face (and he has long hair - sound familiar?); Cassie falling apart over the loss of William/River; Blair admitting to hitting Luna with her truck; so much more exists in the annals of fandom on that place called You Tube. Hope I will be able to get all of the scenes I want to keep before something happens to remove them!
HOW is this show spiraling to its end without DORIAN at the helm? Someone in the execs area is not all there. Which brings me to the next fear - Prospect Park, the new show, and what it will or won't be, if it gets off the ground. Let me be in denial here for a few more weeks.
Strange but true, in saying goodbye, you often miss something more than you thought. Kassie, you're not alone when you cry about the demise of the show, and of possibly the demise of the LAST EXISTING SOAP SUPERCOUPLE on ABC DAYTIME that is Todd and Blair. For us, if it IS the end of Todd Manning, and of Todd and Blair Manning, it's going to be extremely hard to let go. The viewers love you all, too.
Well, I am feeling rather "most pathetic" right now, even considering how I'll feel come January. Gotta get a move on. It's only a TV show, right?

Clip of the Day, Jan. 16 and 17, 2011
I just realized that I forgot to do this yesterday! LOL! So sorry, so we will have double clips today.
Ok Todd is starving to death and finds a knife in the trash. Hmmmm. Relegated to eating out of the trash. A little over a year later, he's a multi-millionaire. Go figure!
Rachel's gift is really nice, I did not even remember that! See, you notice new things every time you watch. :D
What's to say about this clip is how dastardly and chilling he is. He's a mess, mentally, and should be physically because of being sick and also being starved, but he's somehow got as much strength as always, possibly his rage. All I can say is I find him most frightening during these scenes. When he's stalking Nora this way and terrorizing her, he's the most frightening - ever. Roger just pulls this rage and hate out of a hat, I suppose, since he seems like such a nice and together guy. And it works. He's very scary. Of course, he's also trying to be ugly, but we know how futile that is. His singing "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" is something that adds to the spookiness. And, just when you think you're scared enough of what he might do, we realize that Nora is losing her sight. On top of it. The gift from Powell is also a nice touch. No doubt he can play hateful.....if we needed assurance, we have it!
"No Christmas presents for you this year, from anyone but me."
Meanwhile, the Buchs are having Christmas. Wow. Love those scenes so much. I really used to enjoy Christmas on the soaps, unlike today. With the exception of this year's Christmas ep on OLTL, which did not include the character I dislike most, and had a LOT of the characters I do like, including Carmen LaPorto's last go-round as Jack with that adorable new Sam "Manning" and Echo falling into the chimney.
Anyway, back on track. Buchs having Christmas and trying to deal with Alex.
Clint: Wish on a couple, stars, will ya? Miss this guy. You'll seem him added to a section of TRTM soon.
Todd hangs from the pier! LOL. I also love how he's creeping up around her, etc, and starts to realize something is up when she can't see him, and now the fun for him begins. This starts some AWESOME work by HBS as she portrays blind and terrorized Nora. More to follow!
FAIL: He's able to call Nora from a payphone, magically knows the number, and was just sitting on the rocks outside her beach house. Hmm? Oh well. I think he waited too long to attack her, she was alone quite a while before Bo shows up in the next clip. I remember this went on for days when really taking place.

Something appropriate . . . so . . . holidayish!
OMG, I LOVED the Christmas shows. IT made me feel like they were all doing the same things we were in celebrating, like they were real families! They definitely used to show us OLTL until CHRISTMAS EVE....and it seemed so festive and realistic.
Love how Andrew and Cassie are decorating the church....just love this ep. I know it's out of order, and bit JUJU...(sorry) but I just wanted to show it.

Clip of the Day, October 4, 2010
Enjoy another clip courtesy of Juju....we move forward in the trial. Commentary follows.
Marty gets the evil LOOK from Todd. Chilling. Roger is carrying off this part quite well already. I wonder exactly when they decided that Todd was for keeps?
The Kevin family scenes are fantastic. He comes face to face with Marty, and she apologizes right off. Kevin gets bumrushed by Todd, Zach and Powell, he can't even find words for them as they congratulate him. I never realized before how subtly this actor played this; he KNEW they were guilty and could not even find the words to respond to Todd's remarks. Again, attention to detail and character-driven work. Nora makes sure it's Marty who gets credit for Kevin's freedom. Another great detail. Powell's cryptic message, "you didn't deserve to be mixed up in this in the first place." Really? Then why not speak up? Powell knows DARN WELL that his cousin was not there or guilty. His FAMILY. Dead wrong.
Nora wants to meet with the boyz, and Todd gives her trouble. Calls Marty "the little engine that could" and continues to be cocky and overdone about the whole thing. Todd makes it seem like everyone else in the world is wrong. Could he have convinced himself? Nora is not amused. These are GREAT moments, with lots of little edges. Just Powell's LOOK, once again, no words, he appears to be sick over it and it's so obvious that he can't bear it. Todd and Zach are TOUCHING HANDS HERE. That is the strangest thing ever. I ran it back to be sure and at one point, they are clearly touching knuckles. Todd's congratulations of Powell are sickening too. He's convincing himself that he's innocent or does not really think what he did was wrong. Ok...I get pushed over the edge here when Todd KISSES Powell on the cheek....it's nasty and vile, like Todd. He's so unlikeable here, but continues to become MORE LIKEABLE as time passes. Strange. Must be a gift that Roger has! *wink*
FAIL: Nora should have picked up on Powell's feelings a bit earlier and worked on it longer...she makes mentioned of the quiet, and his actions, but ignores it in a way. If I were here, I would have attacked right away to make sure that my clients were not lying. There are a lot of signs that they are. I don't know why she's not more suspicious right away.
QUESTION OF THE DAY: Do you prefer character-driven stories or plot-driven stories and why?

Clip of the Day, Oct. 3, 2010
Another clip for you.....hope you're enjoying them, thanks to juju!!! Of course, my commentary is just for starters. Chime in.
Poor Marty and Rich Susan. Marty is a shell of a person during this, she's brittle, like bones....and Susan is flourishing underneath, propelling Marty to stardom in front of our eyes. Marty. She started out to be a pretty hateful character and ends up being a major player in so many stories for years after (just like Todd). The two of them, Roger and Susan, really are superlative actors at very young ages. The two of them, Todd and Marty, are definitely fated through OLTL history to constantly be in each other's lives. At one point, they almost shared a stepchild....but I should stay focused on the current videos, I digress.
Strong suit - Marty is breaking down, Kevin is too - you HAVE to love this part of the story. And if you are not feeling sympathy for her already, Marty really pulls on the heartstrings when she exonerates Kevin and he cries. Kevin is cleared, and everyone starts to see the case differently, almost immediately. By taking Kevin out of the mix, the citizens of Llanview start thinking, yeah, why not? Why couldn't these guys have done this? Kevin is SO CUTE when he accepts the judge's ruling. I miss that Kevin....why can't they find him and bring him back? "Oh you're breaking my ribs grandpa!" Todd is SMILING in the background.
The LOOK that HANK gives to Marty after court is adjourned....chilly in here! Wow. See, this is what is missing also. LOOKS can convey so much if an actor has talent. However, when they DON'T, words are constantly needed or plot devices. Half these actors (or more) could just convey a story with very few words at all. Suede tells her he's proud, she again responds with a LOOK.
Afterwards, Peter heads up a lively discussion against Marty. Todd's right into it, "who's going to buy the rest of her story?" Peter keeps showing himself, and at the same time, showing Todd. Again, one or two LOOKS between characters can say so much. He's a pure misogynist. Yikes. Marty's apology to Hank is really awesome too....ah the good old days.
FAIL: I never liked how they had the three defendants (not Kevin) lined up against the wall....seemed awkward.

Clip of the Day, September 28, 2010
Good morning! Another day is here....bringing us one step closer to the next Todd episode and possibly, the return of Roger...? Anyway, commentary to follow!
Poor Rachel. Even Sheila is squirming in her seat during this one. It seems a little over the top for a caring father. It's the details like this, about a supporting character to the story, that really made OLTL what it was. The courtroom is a-bustle and Judge Fitz can't even get them to order at one point!! The other DA asks him to let her continue. I really believe that any "Dad" would accept....
And we get a little slice of Peter again. This is the stuff I LOVE. We're getting to slowly, and very slowly I might add, find out just what makes Todd tick through the actions of those around him and himself. "Kind of a kick watching him tear that Rachel apart." I don't think there's another person in the court who thinks that after watching her breakdown, and that's the beauty of OLTL's writing during these stories. Perfectly planned out.
Joey feels sorry for Todd, we're starting to also in our own, unsuspecting way. It's probably even unnoticed the initial time you're watching that the story is building in you loathing and pity at the same time. This is what makes it work, and what is missing from today's Todd stories. I can't pity the Todd we've got now, he's not even Todd, for one, but he's deadpan, too comedic, and not remorseful - he's extremely shallow and too content with the way he is. The Real Todd was never shallow, regardless of how mean and tortured he was at times.
I like Bo's expressions throughout Peter's comments during this trial. Also, Peter and Asa both attack Nora, Bo says "Will you shut up, both of ya?" LOL! Peter Manning seems so self-interested already. "This is trouble," and walks away, not even checking on his kid.
There's an expression on Todd's face around 5:03. Roger already has created a loathsome, detestable character....you just have to LOVE him, there's no way around it.
Rachel's amazing, Hank is amazing, Nora is amazing, Marty is amazing. Just look at her, when she is starting to realize how wrong she is about Kevin, she seems almost physically sick. Susan Haskell deserved all the praise and attention she got during these stories, as did the other players. This is why OLTL was so loved. These characters were FULLY FLESHED OUT. Not a skeleton of someone past, not a robot going through daytime sexy scenes, they were fully fleshed out human characters that we just had to watch. And just look at how many stories and characters are intertwined in this one storyline.
Do you pick up the realization Nora has in this clip? She SEES that Rachel is right. She believes Rachel's assessment and knows that Kevin is totally innocent. I love that moment.
Peter's chat with "the boyz" and Todd's smug smile....argh. There is no way you can't pick up the nuances here of what kind of life Todd may have had. And after watching these clips, I want to sing "We've Only Just Begun" where Todd is concerned.
FAIL: Sorry, Hank, but I have to put the fail on you again. The tearing into Rachel by her own father was not really necessary. Of course, probably in the eyes of OLTL, it was awesome drama. But in real life, no, it just was not realistic.
