"I am a first generation Italian -american. When my parents first immigrated to the Us they spoke practically no english. My father learned thru working with his friends and doing odd jobs. But my mother really never learned until she discovered the amazing world of soap operas. Her and friends would get together and without having a clue what was being said would imagine the stories playing out before there own eyes. Her adventure into soap world started with Dallas & knots landing. When I was born the conection with soaps in my life became immediate. I grew up learning my first words watching Maurice Benard as Nico on all my children and then following him to general hospital."
I love this.....very strong argument in this post for Soaps as an American staple. More at Sudztv link above.
