Roger's NY TIMES Entry

10 Reasons Daytime Television Will Never Be The Same After 2011 | XFINITY TV News

"5. "One Life To Live" Proves Soaps Can Raise Their Ratings

The conventional wisdom about daytime is that declining ratings are inevitable and related to outside forces like cable, the internet, and the economy. The content of the shows themselves is irrelevant. "One Life To Live" proved that wrong when, weeks after its cancellation was announced, the show's ratings rose — and stayed up. Thanks to the intriguing, compelling Tale of Two Todds, Roger Howarth's return succeeded where other big name soap stars comebacks failed. He brought old fans back, but it was the show's overall quality that kept them watching. Surprisingly, the soap has often been the top show among teens and young women, the two demos that are least likely to watch soaps. Unfortunately, this success did not persuade ABC to reconsider canceling the show"

So it's all about Roger, after all.

The Online Network has struck a deal with Universal Music Group. The partnership will bring the sounds of UMG's artists to 'All My Children' and 'One Life to Live' when they air online. "As we continue to develop programming for our online network, we are taking every facet of production into consideration to create a premium product for our viewers," Prospect Park said in a statement. "Previously these programs have not focused on, or had limited contemporary music and artist involvement, and through UMG we can deliver fans from around the world access to some of the world's most popular music and artists all leading to better production, storylines and program experience." Photos of Cassandra Crisp and the COUPONS!!!

REPRINT of PHOTO to go with COUPON CAMPAIGN!  Just to get us motivated!

Personal Plea from The Real Todd Manning Blogowner: Send in Coupons!!!

Want to be able to DO SOMETHING to help save the soaps???

I know many of you have already sent in your coupons to support the coupon campaign, but I am asking that if you have not, or, even better, if you know some folks who are not online fans who can send one in, please do so.  It's important that the fans continue to make a push with this effort so that those on the front lines have additional support.  If you REALLY WANT TO GO ALL OUT, you could ask at work or of your friends and relatives if you can send in a coupon for them.  Every little bit helps.

It requires nothing much, just you completing your name, you cable company info, and sending them in.  In fact, I would be happy to send it FOR YOU if you like, just send me an email with the following:

Your name, address, city state and zip and your cable provider.  If you send that to me in an email, I will mail them for you!  For this, please send it by Friday, Dec. 2 and I will take care of the rest.

OR, you can print out these coupons:
complete and mail them in for yourself or for others as well.

Participate.  It's worth it....stand up for our shows.

I know how disappointing this news is to many of you. We tried to fight the good fight, we fought to the end to get the ratings up, but it wasn't enough. We're sorry we let you down. I just wanted to thank you all for the years of kindness, love and support you've shown me and my family. If you get a chance at some point, maybe say a prayer for the wonderful crew members of "One Life To Live", many of whom are supporting large families, that they may find work soon. God Bless. Happy Thanksgiving.

Kassie Wesley DePaiva | Facebook Response to PP Announcement

Kassie Wesley DePaiva
Words just don't express how sad I am at hearing that Prospect Park has dropped the deal to move forward with "One Life". I think what upsets me the most is how this whole deal has been handled from the get go. I wanted more than anything not to have been cancelled by ABC. I find it mind boggling that a company can spend 45 years building the strongest brand in daytime... launch a cable network to support it and then decide to cancel both broadcast and cable airings leaving the beloved fans with no where to turn for that brand. Then PP shows up out of nowhere as the great white hope promising to continue these shows.... I was happy to sign on. I love what I do and I'm proud to go to work everyday. I was asked to take a cut in pay and was happy to do it if it meant our show would go on. That was the first week of September. But other than a very quick speech on the studio floor by PP in late September the company did not give out any information regarding when and where we would be working. Last Wednesday the cast received an email telling us our dressing rooms must be cleared out by the 9th of Dec. or ABC would be tossing things out... and then to hear the official news today via a media report.

The last 2 weeks have been emotional for me. The stories are rocking and show is so good. It is must see TV. Don't miss a day... don't miss a scene. My hat goes off to Ron Calivarti.... he has written really powerful stuff and I think the fans are going love it. I especially want to shout out to Frank Valentini... who has fought the hardest to make the transition happen. He has been amazing and I want you fans to know how hard he worked to continue giving you fans the show you deserve. He found out this wasn't going to happen just like I did...via a media report.

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving and I have so much to be grateful for but I must say I wish things had worked out differently. It's been the best 18 years of my life. I hope you will continue to watch "One Life" until the bitter sweet end.
Again, this blogger CANNOT BELIEVE how wonderful this actress is, not only in her roles, but in her own personal life.  A giving and sweet person.  We have been so fortunate to have her, and to see her again opposite Roger.

Very Sad News for the Soap World Today

From One Life to Live Fanclub:

After five months of negotiations with various guilds, hundreds of presentations to potential financial and technology partners, and a hope that we could pioneer a new network for the future, it is with great disappointment that we are suspending our aspirations to revive "One Life to Live" and "All My Children" via online distribution.  It is now becoming clear that mounting issues make our ability to meet our deadlines to get OLTL on the air in a reasonable time period following its January 13, 2012 ABC finale impossible.

We believed the timing was right to launch an Online TV Network anchored by these two iconic soap operas, but we always knew it would be an uphill battle to create something historical, and unfortunately we couldn't ultimately secure the backing and clear all the hurdles in time.  We believe we exhausted all reasonable options apparent to us, but despite enormous personal, as well as financial cost to ourselves, we failed to find a solution.

While we narrowed in on a financial infrastructure, the contractual demands of the guilds, which regulate our industry, coupled with the program's inherent economic challenges ultimately led to this final decision. In the end, the constraints of the current marketplace, including the evolution and impact of new media on our industry simply proved too great a match for even our passion.

In our opinion, new models like this can only work with the cooperation of many people striving to make them happen, and we would like to thank and praise the numerous people who tried to help and showed us incredible support.  We are extremely grateful to the fans and media who showed great support to us through this process, to ABC who did everything in their control to help, and we are especially grateful for the support and encouragement from many of the Soaps' cast and crew themselves.

We hope that our efforts are not lost, and that we somehow created a dialogue and movement on the feasibility of first run, network quality content online.

Of special note, we would like to thank Frank Valentini (Executive Producer), Ron Carlivati (Head Writer of OLTL), Agnes Nixon, many of the cast of OLTL including Michael Easton, Ted King, Kelley Missal, Melissa Archer, and of course Erika Slezak all of whom signed on quickly and did all they could to help, as well as our own Christine Sacani.  Cameron Mathison and Lindsay Hartley also get our sincerest thanks for their support.  We feel terrible we couldn't come through for them and we were very much looking forward to working together.
With appreciation,
Rich Frank

Insider on Prospect Park's Plans to Move AMC and OLTL to The Web Failing: "The Unions Were Willing to Negotiate" | Daytime Confidential

One Life to Live and All My Children Not Heading Online - Today's News: Our Take |

AFTRA statement posted on DD

AFTRA-the union that represents actors on AMC and OLTL -released the following statement regarding Prospect Park's decision to suspend production of the soaps. "AFTRA was deeply disappointed to read that the executives at Prospect Park have decided to suspend their efforts to produce the long-running and popular daytime serials, 'One Life to Live' and 'All My Children,' via online distribution. Despite initial progress in our negotiations with Prospect Park toward resolving a fair agreement to cover the performers appearing on these programs, we were perplexed and disappointed that for the past month Prospect Park has not responded to our repeated inquiries to resume those discussions. We now conclude from the press reports that Prospect Park faced other challenges unrelated to our negotiations, which prevented continuation of those discussions. We remain hopeful that an opportunity to revive these two popular series will emerge in the future, and remain ready to resume discussions should that opportunity arise."

Thanksgiving is my favorite time of the year because I have the opportunity to be near my family. I've always treasured the time when we all arrive and share in the excitement of seeing each other. As we sit around the Thanksgiving table we are reminded of our blessings and all the things we are grateful for. We eat and share, laugh and remember. I hope everyone finds a table to sit around tomorrow with people that they love. I hope we all can take a moment to consider how precious life is and how great it is to live in the amazing country. I'm most grateful for family, health, and the joy I find in my family and friends.
God bless,

I will never understand how anyone, even a non-Blair fan, could not appreciate the kindness and professionalism of this woman.  I wish her the best in her endeavors.

A New Mvid by a new vidder: Everything

From DD - a visitor to the studio yesterday

While I was @ the studio yesterday I saw the following cast leave via main entrance on W 66th Street; Tina, Vicky, Clint, Dani, new Cole, Hope triplets, Jack, Ford, Jess, Cutter, Nate, Shane, Langston and Marko.

Roger & Kassie left the studio from the West End Ave entrance not long after each other.

Kassie & Kristin filmed yesterday while Roger completed his scenes on Wednesday.

I kinda figured the odds were against me yesterday to see Roger & Kassie for one last time. It was an very emotional bittersweet time for the whole cast and crew as well as the fans. Word is, Kassie was crying pretty much for the last two days. Poor thing. I understand how she feels. I will miss Blair, her GORGEOUS soul mate Todd and their children Jack & Starr. After being a loyal fan for 30 years, I'm glad I had the chance to be part of the going away party. Hearing and sharing the stories I love & hate with other fans, was really amazing. At one point, Frank Valentini came out with gifts for the fans. I got a beautiful hard covered OLTL anniversary book, tote bag and pen. So unexpected. I really appreciated his gesture to the fans. Very a nice man. We chatted for a quick moment concerning the future of OLTL 2.0. He was very clear when he said, the future of the show airing on Prospect Park was NOT dead. He claimed the producers of Prospect Park love OLTL and are totally committed to getting the show off the ground. He also, asked the fans to please NOT give up on the show and to please continue watching it on ABC till the end. The way I read his statement was, if the ratings stay "high" receiving the financial backing for the show, will be easy to obtain. If fans decide to throw in the towel now and the ratings slip, the funds to seduce the project on Prospect Park will fail. As much as I LOAHTE Ron's T&B story right now, I want the option to see my T&B reunion on Prospect Park. I assured Frank, I would continue to support OLTL and watch till the last episode airs on ABC. I decided this morning, I will go one step further and email my thoughts and suggestions to Prospect Park for the Todd and Blair. I figured after 30 years of watching this show since I was a kid, it was the least I could do for the fate of my ultimate super couple.

Hope Hummingbird won't mind!

OLTL Actors On Final Day At ABC | Soap Opera Digest

Scott Sickles, Facebook Post

On my first day at One Life to Live, Ron Carlivati began the writers meeting by announcing that all the stories we had been working on (stories we were not only in the middle of shooting and had BEGUN TO AIR) had been dropped by the network and we had to pick up from where we left off last week (the week before I started) and basically make shit up from scratch. The first question was, "So, Bess has left town with the baby. Where's she going, now that she's not going where she was gonna go?" And I looked at those big empty whiteboards with astonishment and trepidation. And so the adventure began... In the nearly three years (2 and 3/4) since, I got to write for most of my favorite daytime divas -- including scenes with Erica Slezak, Robin Strasser and Kim Zimmer on screen at the same time!!! -- and an army of great actors, possibly the best gay love story to ever air on television at any time of day, one-third of a musical, for insanely wonderful supercouples, for BOTH Todds (at the same time) and their psycho mother, for Andrea Evans who bears special mention because the first episode of any soap opera I ever saw was the Y&R where Patty shot Jack, an avalanche, a super crazy and ridiculously funny Special Episode that will air on December 19th that I'm not at liberty to describe to you so you'll have to trust me that it's fabulous, and of course the most important scenes ever to take place between a dog and a baby. I got to do all of this with a writing team whose talent is truly humbling. I get to do this because of the tireless efforts of my agent Barbara Hogenson; because of the tutelage of the amazing Millee Taggart Ratcliffe and Susan Dansby; because of the guidance and support of Sue Johnson, Jesse Murray and Anna Theresa Cascio (who has done more for my sanity than she may ever know); and because Ron Carlivati and Frank Valentini are generous enough to let me. Thanks to them! Congratulations to all! Have a great last day at ABC! I CAN'T WAIT TO DO IT AGAIN!!! All my love, respect and admiration,

Scott Sickles

From SOC

Here's what WE do know about the PP/OLTL studio and funding debacle - SFU's own Tammy Kreiss went to the OLTL studios Thursday and was able to get some answers from Bob Woods, OLTL EP Frank Valentini, OLTL HW Ron Carlivati and yes, OLTL creator Agnes Nixon
It is true that ABC ordered OLTL to vacate the studios this week ASAP as soon as filming is complete. While Prospect Park has lost some funding, Carlivati & Valentini assured fans that they do have the money to secure a studio and that they are looking at options such as JC Studios (AW/ATWT/Cosby Show's former home in Brooklyn) along with Silver Cup Studios in Queens where Sex and the City was filmed. There has been no official announcement as to WHY ABC wouldn't cooperate with PP/OLTL and let them stay at their studios until Katie moves in as expected.

This from SOC as reported to me by Alyssa.

One Life to Live's Online Reboot Hits Snag, But Isn't "Dead In The Water" | Daytime Confidential

In the midst of this, I'll come right out and say it!

All is not lost.

Nope.  Can't be.

Info from sources:  RUMOR HAS IT we will supposedly get a statement from PP later today.  It's not over until it's over.  It may not be on time.  They are short a great amount of funds.  ABC seems to have done something not-so-classy, even if as small as not being gracious enough to allow the cast to stay put until it's organized or repaired (oh gee, shocker).

I'll try and get anything I can to you all.  Until then, do not give up hope.  Hope is the thing that lasts until that last final word of the credits roll on Jan. 13.

ABC To OLTL Actors: "Get Out!" | Soap Opera Digest

Raven's comments on recent OLTL/PP situ

Just as I feared. We've been had. Too upset to say much more right now. We were placated and controlled. God, I hope I'm wrong on this one. For once I want to be wrong. OLTL is the show I never miss. A part of my daily routine. The show I always looked forward to. Those manipulative *******s. This is why I could never fully exhale. I just had a bad feeling that I couldn't shake. How clever. How utterly cruel. Prospect Park can go straight to hell and take Disney with them. Collaborating slime buckets. I guess I had more to say than I thought.....

Thanks to Gail for finding this.

Smashwords - Soap Opera Uncensored: A book by Nelson Branco

Nelson's latest on changes in Emmys

Silas. Tweets

It's over. Word from the studio is funding has fallen through. Disney thinks they have won and thinks it killed #OLTL.
We've been manipulated - by them and by their plants on our side. The entire thing was staged from the beginning.

OMG - never mind complaining, looks like we are not getting PP after all?  I'll let you know more when I get it.

Hillary B Smith Tweet

After Silas' drop last evening that something's up with OLTL, I see this today from HBS:

"I'm here 4 my last tape day on OLTL for ABC. Last night we were told that we must remove all of our belongings from the dressing rooms."

I am TOTALLY SCARED, this cannot be good info.  I pray it just means they are put on HOLD - not shelved or cancelled completely.

Today will be an important day to watch the press and to watch Twitter and FB.  I will be working, and won't be able to access anything until this evening, so.....keep your feelers out, I'll be asking you all later.

OLTL Two Scoops: Bad decisions are a way of life | One Life to Live @

"Blair continued her old pattern last week, as she "chose" Tomas over Todd. I can't believe Tomas fell for her act. We've seen Blair run to the nearest anti-Todd every time Todd makes her mad, and that is exactly what she did this time. Blair might credit Dorian for her revelation, but it was really Todd's reaction to seeing Blair and Tomas in his office. I hope Tomas hasn't been completely fooled into thinking Todd won't be an issue between him and Blair. He might get to be with Blair for a short while, but she will go back to Todd before it's over. That's what she does!"

Saturday, November 12, 2011

As reported by friend of The Real Todd Manning Blog on 11/12/11:

I went to the ABC studios yesterday before heading to comedy show with hubby.  Was told by a fan club rep of another actor (who I don't want to mention) that RH was there.  She had been in the studio the day before and had seen the call list.  She confirmed that KDP and that KA were also there.

I waited in the cold forever.  This person was definitely in with her actor/actress. Here's what I learned:

PP has leased the ABC studios.  Whether it's a temp fix until their own studio is up and running I'm not sure. Note:  The Real Todd Manning Blog staff had also heard a similar report, and this confirms.  And I didn't want to push. According to her, PP is ready to start taping new epis as early as the week after next.  Meaning ABC will wrap on the 18th and PP epis begin taping on the 21st (according to fan club rep). I know nothing about TnB other than that they were in the building taping.

KA and brother EA are heading to Cali for pilot season.  The mother is pushing her to go, KA wanted to stay in NY and at OL.  KA is very upset and has been balling all week.  She is no longer exiting main door.  At about 7pm KA's mother was in the lobby.  I think she came down to see if fans were outside, personally.  She definitely exited side door.

[Rumor has it that] PP was only negotiating with David Gregory in hopes that it would woo Bree Williamson, when she decided not to go to PP negotiations with David Gregory ceased.  They didn't want him without her.

I met yesterday David Gregory, BW and Ford's father. Also Roscoe Borne, Mitch. [Susan Batten] Luna Moody ran out towards parking stopping to talk to no one.  She had no coat and it was cold.  I also saw the person that plays Bianca Morales of Access Llanview.

I met KDPm who was gracious enough as always to stop for a photo.  And when speaking to me she had to bend forward with her hands on knees to look me in the eye because I'm super short and she is literally a giant.  She is so incredibly beautiful in person, it's sick. She nicely told me that she suspected that RH had used side door to leave.

The cast was super tired.  Their out time should have been 5:30 pm it was 7:45 before anyone exited.  They were kind but tired and I think they all just wanted to go home.

I did not see RH. I was bummed, but I'm lucky enough to have met him once. After waiting so long in the cold I was so down, but hey, maybe he had to subway it instead of head to parking, and that's why he left the way he did. Who knows??

Anyhow, best I can tell PP is happening. :)"
Another aside:  The Real Todd Manning Blog Staff has also heard much of the same as above from sources.  Good to hear it in two places.  Thanks to our Blog Friend Ellie!

OLTL PreVUE: Week of November 14 Edition | Soap Opera Network

Report: Prospect Park Halts All My Children Relaunch

As reported by ABC Soaps In Depth, Prospect Park has indefinitely put on hold plans to relaunch AMC via its new web hub,, which itself is scheduled to (hopefully) go live in early 2012.

I knew this was coming.  According to one of my sources, OLTL was always what PP was interested in, and AMC was part of the deal.  SORT OF a "buy both or buy none" deal.  I will NEVER forgive ABC for any of this, as I am sure, fans won't either.

Roger's Performance, 11/10

As much as the happenings of the show yesterday may not please many of you, Roger's performance was paramount.  His face throughout the taunting with both Blair's and Irene's words was perfection.

Every expression that man chooses is perfectly matched.  As a viewer, I love that I am able to watch his every emotion expressed on that gorgeous face of his.

Kudos to Roger, and let's hang in with our hopes he finds a project he can enjoy and excel at soon.  Hopefully, will be One Life online, but whatever it is, this blogger wishes him the best of success!

We Love Soaps TV Comment on Kassie's Emotional State Yesterday 11/8

It was reported by We Love Soaps TV at twitter that Kassie DePaiva cried during her interview yesterday....ugh, I can just feel the loss of this show in the pit of my gut.  It's almost over and done with now, and so painful.

I guess it's winding down.  It is interesting to me that after about 35 years of watching soaps, I am now connected to a totally different one than when I started.  GH was my soap for years.  OLTL was also a show I did watch regularly, but not as faithfully as GH, mostly because as a kid, we got home in time for GH not OLTL.  In summers, OLTL was also part of the routine.  I grew up with Viki, Joe, Wanda, Larry....and later, Clint, Bo, Asa, Nora, Todd, and Blair.

Can this be possible?  In scouring the old clips for some nostalgia, I watch as Dorian thinks she has breast cancer and spends a "final fling" in NY with Jason Webb (ah Jason) and touches his scar on his face (and he has long hair - sound familiar?); Cassie falling apart over the loss of William/River; Blair admitting to hitting Luna with her truck; so much more exists in the annals of fandom on that place called You Tube.  Hope I will be able to get all of the scenes I want to keep before something happens to remove them!

HOW is this show spiraling to its end without DORIAN at the helm?  Someone in the execs area is not all there.  Which brings me to the next fear - Prospect Park, the new show, and what it will or won't be, if it gets off the ground.  Let me be in denial here for a few more weeks.

Strange but true, in saying goodbye, you often miss something more than you thought.  Kassie, you're not alone when you cry about the demise of the show, and of possibly the demise of the LAST EXISTING SOAP SUPERCOUPLE on ABC DAYTIME that is Todd and Blair.  For us, if it IS the end of Todd Manning, and of Todd and Blair Manning, it's going to be extremely hard to let go.  The viewers love you all, too.

Well, I am feeling rather "most pathetic" right now, even considering how I'll feel come January.  Gotta get a move on.  It's only a TV show, right?
